Andreas Waschburger, Poliana Okimoto Win Cancun Stop of FINA 10K Marathon Swimming World Cup

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, May 2. THE German delegation took the spotlight in Cancun (MEX) for the second stage of the 2011 FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup on April 30 by winning three out of the six medals on offer.

36 athletes (17 women and 19 men) from 14 countries entered the water to complete eight loops of a rectangular course. The race unfolded smoothly as surface conditions were calm with only slight chop and the 27.8°C water was clear under and above.

In both fields the race was very close, characterised by a tight pack of more than 30 swimmers. Andreas Waschburger (GER) emerged triumphant with a time of 1h53m58s (he was seventh in Santos), putting only one second between himself and teammate Thomas Lurz (1h53m59s). Lurz, who won the Santos leg, leads the general standings so far. Taking third was Alex Meyer (USA), clocking 1h54m12s. Sergiy Fesenko (AZE) went head-to-head for the touch with Petar Stoychev (BUL) with a time of 1h54m21s.

Among women, Poliana Okimoto (BRA, 2h01m58s) imposed her finish in front of Eva Risztov (HUN, 2h02m00s), who powered home a second ahead of Isabell Donath (GER, 2h02m01s). After a silver medal in Santos, Okimoto currently sits atop the women's general ranking. As for the German swimmer, she nicely improves her fourth-place finish from Santos with a bronze.
