(The following is today's entry in Becca Schwartz's continuing diary, describing her experiences at the World Maccabiah Games in Israel.)

HAIFA, July 15.HELLO from Israel again, this time from Haifa!

Haifa is on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, in northwestern Israel. Haifa is where the swimming venue for the Maccabiah Games is. It is very beautiful because of the sea and Mount Carmel.

Before we left Tel Aviv we went to a beautiful place where all of the plants from Biblical times have been planted. Here, all of the athletes and volunteers from the American delagation who had not yet been, were Bar and Bat Mitzvahed in a special ceremony. It was a very proud moment for all of the participants.

We returned to the Kfar Maccabiah (Maccabiah Village)to find the Canadian and South African teams had
arrived. We then had lunch with all of the American delegation and set off for our separate venues.

Competition starts tomorrow and all of the swimmers from the U.S., Canada, Columbia, Germany, South Africa, Brazil, and Mexico have arrived at our hotel
in Haifa. The competitiveness has not yet set in and we are all having fun getting to know each other and learn about the other places we all come from.

Also, the opening ceremonies are Monday night, I'm sure it will be an unbelievable event.

Until next time,

Shalom,
Becca
