MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, March 25. IN a battle of the previous two NCAA titlists in the event, Stanford's Austin Staab out-dueled California's Tom Shields for the 100-yard fly title at the NCAA Division I Men's Championships.

Staab checked in with a 44.69, which tied one of this marks for the fifth-fastest of all time. Staab owns the fastest time ever with an American, NCAA, U.S. Open record of 44.18 from his winning race in 2009. The win gave Stanford its NCAA ninth title in the event's history. Pablo Morales (1984, 85, 86, 87), Jay Mortenson (1988, 89) and Dod Wales (1999) were previous winners for the Cardinal.

Shields, the 2010 victor with a 44.91, checked in with the identical time for second this year. That swim is among the top 15 times of all time, but short of his fifth-ranked personal best of 44.78.

Michigan's Dan Madwed (45.57), California's Graeme Moore (45.71), Ohio State's Tim Phillips (45.90), Stanford's Bobby Bollier (45.92), LSU's Hannes Heyl (46.12) and California's Nathan Adrian (46.20) rounded out the top eight.

Michigan's Sean Fletcher topped the consolation heat with a 46.13, while Wisconsin's Dan Lester placed 10th overall in 46.31. Texas' Jimmy Feigen (46.38), Georgia's Mark Dylla (46.44), California's Mathias Gydesen (46.55), UNLV's Cody Roberts (46.69), Florida's Marcin Cieslak (46.70) and Arizona's AJ Tipton (47.30) also pocketed points for their teams in the small final.

With four point scorers, Cal jumped out to a huge lead with 240 points. Stanford moved up to second with 203 points, while Texas fell to third with 198 points. Arizona (145) and Auburn (142.5) held fourth and fifth.
