NCAA Division I Men’s Championships: Stanford’s Austin Staab Wins 200 IM

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, March 24. STANFORD's Austin Staab triumphed in the sprint medley 200-yard IM at the NCAA Division I Men's Championships.

Staab put together a strong medley time with a 1:41.57 to win the event, and skyrocket to fifth in the all-time rankings. Stanford will not lose much to graduation when the senior finishes this year, as incoming freshman David Nolan would have won the NCAA title this year with his fourth-ranked high school record of 1:41.39 from last week in Pennsylvania. Staab's win gives Stanford its NCAA-record setting ninth win in the 200 IM. Previous Cardinal winners are George Harrison (1959), Dick Roth (1967), Pablo Morales (1985, 86, 87), Jeff Rouse (1992), Tom Wilkens (1998) and Markus Rogan (2002).

Arizona's Cory Chitwood, a backstroke king, put together an incredible runner-up effort of 1:42.28, while Georgia's Bill Cregar finished third in 1:43.56. Chitwood moved up to 11th all time in the event's history.

Texas' Austin Surhoff, the defending champion, finished fourth in 1:43.58, while California's Martin Liivamagi and Florida's Marcin Cieslak finished fifth and sixth in 1:43.59 and 1:43.69. Michigan's Kyle Whitaker (1:43.92) and Arizona's Austen Thompson (1:44.49) rounded out the top eight.

Louisville's Carlos Almeida (1:43.97), Florida's Sebastien Rousseau (1:44.24), Texas' Nick D'Innocenzo (1:44.51), Northwestern's Alex Tyler (1:45.03), Virginia's Matt Houser (1:45.08), California's Marcin Tarczynski (1:45.09), California's Nolan Koon (1:45.37) and Georgia's Mark Dylla (1:45.63).

Stanford maintained the lead with 90 points, while Texas held second with 73 points. Arizona (58), California (58) and Virginia (50) held third through fifth.
