NCAA Division I Men's Championships: Stanford Wins 200 Free Relay With American Record -- March 24, 2011

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, March 24. STANFORD's Alex Coville, Austin Staab, Jakob Allen and Aaron Wayne posted their second American record of the day with a sterling time of 1:15.26 to win the men's 200-yard free relay at the NCAA Division I Men's Championships.

Earlier today during prelims, Stanford clocked a 1:15.84 to take the American record away from Texas (1:15.90, 2009). Tonight, the Cardinal dropped the time even further, but still came up short of the U.S. Open and NCAA record of 1:14.08 set by Auburn in 2009.


The win gave Stanford its NCAA-record ninth win in the event's history. Previous wins came in 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1998, 2001, 2002 and 2003.

California's Nathan Adrian, Graeme Moore, Josh Daniels and Tom Shields ripped off a second-place time of 1:15.34 with Adrian dropping his second 18.7 time of the day. First, posted an 18.76 in 50 free qualifying. His leadoff tonight of 18.74 ties for the eighth-fastest performance of all time.

Auburn's Adam Brown, Kohlton Norys, Karl Krug and Micelo Chierghini finished third in 1:15.58. Arizona (1:16.72), USC (1:16.98), Texas (1:17.03), Minnesota (1:17.24) and Virginia (1:18.22) also competed in the finale.

Texas A&M's Amini Fonua, John Dalton, Balazs Makany and Kyle Troskot won the B final in 1:17.71. Clemson (1:17.76), Ohio State (1:18.13), Tennessee (1:18.59), Michigan (1:18.73), UNLV (1:18.75) and Florida (1:19.12) scored, while North Carolina was disqualified.
