NCAA Division I Women’s Championships: Georgia Caps Night Two With 800 Free Win

AUSTIN, Texas, March 18. DAY two of the NCAA Division I Women's Championships went in the books with Georgia snatching the women's 800 free relay title.

Georgia's Morgan Scroggy, Megan Romano, Shannon Vreeland and Allison Schmitt won in 6:55.40, giving Georgia its fifth 800 free relay title in school history, and defending its 2010 title. Previous Bulldog wins came in 2001, 2005 and 2006.

"It feels good to know that we went out and did what we know we can. We're just really happy. We wanted to put a good stamp on the night," Scroggy said. "We've got a lot of swimming to do. The morning will be crucial for our team to get some numbers and get some momentum. This win keeps us confident, but it's anybody's race. We have to swim well in the morning."

California's Hannah Wilson, Erica Dagg, Sara Isakovic and Liv Jensen finished a distant second in 6:58.71, while Arizona's Alyssa Anderson, Margo Geer, Sarah Denninghoff and Monica Drake also cleared 7:00 with a third-place 6:59.20.

Texas (7:00.87), Florida (7:00.89), Virginia (7:03.04), Indiana (7:03.17) and USC (7:04.21) made up the rest of the top eight.

California finished the night with a leading tally of 295 points, while Georgia closed to within 20 points with a second-place 274.5 points. USC (253), Stanford (192) and Arizona (184) finished third through fifth heading into tomorrow. Texas (172), Florida (149), Minnesota (139), Auburn (127) and Texas A&M (124) comprised the rest of the top 10.
