NCAA Division I Women’s Championships: California Claims 200 Free Relay

AUSTIN, Texas, March 17. CALIFORNIA started the first night of the 2011 NCAA Division I Women's Championships off right with a victory in the women's 200 free relay.

The California foursome of Hannah Wilson, Colleen Fotsch, Erica Dagg and Liv Jensen claimed the title in 1:27.36 to break the pool record of 1:27.72 set by Arizona. The triumph is Cal's second in the event's history, as the quartet of Anya Kolbisen, Haley Cope, Nicole Omphroy and Joscelin Yeo won the 2000 title in short course meter action with a 1:40.18.

"It's awesome," Dagg said about winning. "It's a great way to start off the meet and start off the session. We had a great morning, everyone really stepped it up. The whole team was with us on that relay."

Arizona's Margo Geer, Kait Flederbach, Grace Finnegan and Aubrey Peacock placed second tonight in 1:28.02, while Texas' Kelsey Amundsen, Bethany Adams, Ellen Lobb and Karlee Bispo dropped a strong third-place effort of 1:28.06 in front of a home crowd. Stanford (1:28.15), Auburn (1:28.43), Wisconsin (1:28.67), Georgia (1:28.99) and Maryland (1:29.55) earned the rest of the top eight finishes.

Florida's Sarah Bateman, Shara Stafford, Ellese Zalewski and Jamie Bohunicky won the B final in 1:28.56, while LSU's Jane Trepp, Amanda Kendall, Kannon Betzen and Samantha Goates clinched 10th overall in 1:29.23. USC (1:29.53), Virginia (1:29.56), Texas A&M (1:29.68), Tennessee (1:29.70), Michigan (1:30.30) and Penn State (1:30.76) completed the consolation heat.

California took an early lead with 40 points, while Arizona placed second with 34 points. Texas (32), Stanford (30) and Auburn (28) made up the top five.
