Japan Cancels National Championships; May Hold Tsunami Charity Event

By Hideki Mochizuki, Swimming World Japanese correspondent

TOKYO, Japan, March 16. THE Japanese Swimming Federation decided today to cancel the 2011 Japanese National Championships, which were scheduled from April 5-10 at the Tatsumi International Swimming Center. Due to the catastrophe earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan, the Tatsumi pool sustained partial damage to its water systems.

The Federation will continue looking for alternatives for holding a selection meet for this year's World Championships to be held in Shanghai, including the potential of holding the selection meet in Hamamatsu from April 9-10. The Federation would likely hold that meet as a charity event to aid those impacted by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that hit northeastern Japan last Friday.
