National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Championships: NAIA Record Books Torched

ST. PETERS, Missouri, March 3. MEMBERS of the 2011 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Championships took deadly aim at the NAIA record books, downing standard left and right. Meanwhile, the Fresno Pacific men and Cal Baptist women took day two leads in the short course yard formatted meet.

In the team races, Fresno Pacific pushed out to the lead among the men with 238.5 pints, while Cal Baptist stood second with 200 points. Lindenwood (147), Simon Fraser (124) and Concordia (117) made up the top five.

Cal Baptist led the women with 242 points, while Azusa Pacific stood second with 141 points. Fresno Pacific (139), Concordia (127) and Simon Fraser (117) claimed third through fifth.

Concordia's Alex Peters clipped the NAIA record in the women's 500 free with a top time of 4:52.24. That performance edged the 4:52.33 set by Simon Fraser's Kathryn Rosberg in 2007. Cal Baptist's Adriana Quezada took second in 4:56.40, while SFU's Meghan Quon placed third in 4:59.24.

SCAD's Alex Graudins demolished the NAIA record in the men's 500 free with a winning time of 4:25.32. That effort far surpassed the 4:27.02 set by Drury's Tomas Eriksson way back in 1991. Fresno's Bobby Yribarren took second in 4:32.31, while Asbury's Daniel Bowman finished third in 4:32.32.

Simon Fraser's David Hibberd crushed an NAIA record of his own with a 1:47.55 in the men's 200 IM. That swim cleared the 1:49.44 set by Cal Baptist's Kevin Sellars last year. Lindenwood's Javier Hernandez took second in 1:49.96, while Sellars wound up third in 1:50.05.

CBU went 1-2 in the women's 200 IM with Norra Stroh (2:06.03) and Hazel Castillo (2:06.42) topping the podium. Biola's April Smith finished third in 2:07.31. SFU's Nicole Cossey (23.48) and Kristine Lawson (23.98) took first and second in the women's 50 free. Fresno's Sofie Gjemmestad touched third in 24.03. Notably, CBU's Mary Hanson clocked a 23.32 to win the B final.

Fresno's Marko Tanasovski (20.07) and Paul Marie-Rose (20.47) finished 1-2 in the men's 50 free. SCAD's Vitali Pushkar-Verbitsky and Fresno's Brad Babcock tied for third with matching 20.54s.

In diving, CBU's Trevor Graifman beat out Concordia's Christopher Salgado, 286.90 to 281.05, for the men's one-meter title. Illinois Tech's Ian McNair took third overall with 248.85 points.

In relay action, an unidentified team from SCAD won the women's 200 medley relay in 1:44.30. That time beat the NAIA record of 1:45.04 set by Fresno Pacific last year. Cal Baptist (1:44.40) and Fresno Pacific (1:44.93) also cleared the previous standard with second and third-place finishes.

Fresno Pacific's Carl Weigley, Marko Tanasovski, Paul Marie-Rose and Brad Babcock won the men's 200 medley relay in 1:28.90, beating the NAIA record of 1:29.86 set by Fresno last year. Simon Fraser also beat the old record with a 1:29.69 for second.

Fresno's Carl Weigley, Bobby Yribarren, Raymond Eggert and Paul Marie-Rose chopped down the NAIA record in the men's 800 free relay with a 6:39.60. That swim smashed the 6:42.98 set by Cal Baptist in 2010. Simon Fraser's second-place squad also beat the former record with a 6:42.94. SFU's David Hibberd clocked a 1:37.47 as the 200 free leadoff, clearing his previous NAIA record of 1:38.08 set a year ago.

CBU's Mary Hanson, Hannah Braun, Norra Stroh and Adriana Quezada claimed the NAIA mark in the women's 800 free relay with a 7:33.75. That time bettered the 7:35.65 set by Simon Fraser back in 2008.
