Canadian Interuniversity Sport Championships: Calgary Sweeps Team Titles; Jason Block, Erica Morningstar, Ryan Cochrane Post Title Trifectas

CALGARY, Alberta, Canada, February 27. THE Canadian Interuniversity Sport Championships took place this weekend with the Calgary women and men finishing atop the team standings in the short course meter competition.

The Calgary women won with 778.5 points, while UBC took second with 648.5 points. Toronto (341), Victoria (227.5) and Montreal (224) completed the top five. The Calgary men posted 543.5 points for the victory, while UBC took second here as well with 493 points. Rouge (397), Toronto (363) and Victoria (244.5) finished third through fifth.

Jason Block stopped the clock in 1:00.11 to win the men's 100 breast. He followed up with a 200 breast triumph on the second night in 2:12.11. He finished the breaststroke sweep with a 27.36 in the men's 50 breast on the final day.

Erica Morningstar hit the wall in 1:05.99 for the women's 100 breast win. She doubled up the second night with a 59.34 to win the women's 100 back. Morningstar completed a title trifecta with a 2:09.70 to win the women's 200 IM on the last day.

Ryan Cochrane tied with Colin Miazga for the men's 200 free title with matching 1:47.81s. Cochrane earned his second title during the second evening with a 3:48.13 in the men's 400 free. Cochrane's third title came by way of the men's 1500 free with a 15:03.27 for the win.

Stephanie Horner tallied a 4:41.40 to win the women's 400 IM. Horner doubled up on the second night with a 2:12.69 to win the women's 200 fly. Meanwhile, Savannah King stopped the clock in 4:11.47 for the women's 400 free victory. On the final day of swimming, she clocked an 8:35.86 to win the women's 800 free.

Hilary Caldwell snared the women's 50 back in 28.25, and doubled with a 2:08.22 to win the women's 200 back. Additionally, Seanna Mitchell picked up the women's 100 fly title in 1:00.98. She doubled up with a 54.72 to win the women's 100 free.

Zack Chetrat earned the men's 100 fly crown in 53.30, before winning the 200 fly in 1:57.45 on the second evening. Meanwhile, Dominique Massie-Martel captured the men's 50 free in 22.68, and completed the sprint sweep with a 48.91 to win the men's 100 free on the final day. Steven Bielby tracked down the men's 400 IM title in 4:13.60. He swept the IM events with a 2:00.24 on the final day to win the men's 200 IM.

Also for the women, Kevyn Peterson won the women's 200 free in 1:59.08, while Paige Schultz earned the women's 50 fly title in 27.43. Martha McCabe rolled to victory in the women's 200 breast with a 2:23.15. Marie-Pier Ratelle won the women's 50 free in 25.05, while Allison Long wound up with the women's 50 breast title in 30.91.

Among the men, David Sharpe earned the men's 50 back title in 24.99, while Kelly Aspinall claimed the men's 100 back in 53.89. Mike Smerek placed first in the men's 50 fly with a 24.05, while Matt Hawes topped the men's 200 back in 1:56.48.

In relay action, Calgary's Erica Morningstar, Bethany Flemington, Fiona Doyle and Seanna Mitchell won the women's 400 free relay in 3:41.03. UBC's Tommy Gossland, Rory Biskupski, Kelly Aspinall and Duncan Furrer topped the men's 400 free relay in 3:17.83.

Morningstar, Julianne Brown, Talia Benson and Kevyn Peterson returned to win the women's 800 free relay in 8:05.63, while teammates Connor Maxey, Brad Hankewich, Colin Miazga and David Dimitrov topped the men's 800 free relay in 7:17.97.

Morningstar, Allison Long, Jessica Johnson and Mitchell completed the relay sweep for Calgary with a 4:04.82 in the women's 400 medley relay. Calgary's Gleb Suvorov, Jason Block, Dimitrov and Miazga posted a 3:37.66 to win the men's 400 medley relay.
