Water Polo: US, Canadian Women Advance to Holiday Cup Final -- July 8, 2001
LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., July 7. WITH fans banging on anything they could find, including pots and pans from their home kitchens, the United States women's national team crushed the Netherlands, 12-4. U.S. Olympians, Heather Moody (Green River, WY), Ericka Lorenz (San Diego,CA), Coralie Simmons (Hemet, CA) and national team newcomer Margie Dingeldein (Merced, CA), each scored two goals a piece to account for eight of the twelve U.S. goals.
When the game began it was Danielle de Bruijn, Netherlands, who scored the first goal. Lorenz, then put Team USA on the board by firing an outside shot that went over the goalie's shoulder and tied the game, 1-1. From then on, both teams traded goals until midway through the second quarter when the U.S. kicked its game into high gear.
With the score tied at 4-4, and two minutes left in the second quarter, Team USA began to flex its muscles. The U.S. outscored the Netherlands 8-0 for the remainder of the game. Nicolle Payne (Cerritos, CA), with 7 saves, led the U.S. defense that held the Netherlands scoreless during the final 17 minutes of action.
The game was the second of two semifinal games played during the evening of world-class competition. Canada defeated Italy, 9-7 in the first semifinal.
The victories by Team USA and Canada will advance both teams to the championship of the Holiday Cup on Sunday night at 7:45 p.m., in Los Alamitos, California. Sunday will be a rematch of last year's Holiday Cup final in which the U.S. won, 5-4.
The Netherlands will play the reigning World Champion, Italy, for third place on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. While the U.S. Juniors will close out round robin play at 5:15 p.m. against Greece.
· The United States men's national team defeated Brazil for the second time in two days, 11-4. Geremy Pope led the U.S. offense with four goals, while Merrill Moses was on fire in the goal and stopped 13 shots. Team USA and Brazil will play their third of three exhibition games tomorrow at El Toro High School at 7:00 p.m.
