Pacific 10 Women’s Championships: Day One

FEDERAL WAY, Washington, February 23. CALIFORNIA captured the 200-yard medley relay in a school-record, meet-record and automatic NCAA qualifying time of 1:35.62 and later won the 800-yard freestyle relay to finish the first night of the Pac-10 Championships in first place on Wednesday at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center. The Golden Bears lead the way with 128 points after the only two women's events on Wednesday. Stanford and USC are tied for second place with 110 points each, UCLA is fourth (102), Washington State and Oregon State are tied for fifth (94), Arizona is seventh (52) and Arizona State is eighth (48).

The Cal A quartet of freshman Cindy Tran, sophomore Caitlin Leverenz, junior Colleen Fotsch and junior Liv Jensen swam the winning 200-medley relay. USC's A relay was second in the 200-medley relay with an automatic NCAA qualifying time of 1:37.11. The Bears broke the previous 200-medley relay conference championships record of 1:36.53 set by Arizona in 2009 and the prior school record of 1:36.60 set in 2007.

The Cal A relay of senior Hannah Wilson, senior Erica Dagg, junior Sara Isakovic and senior Katie Kastes swam an automatic NCAA qualifying time of 7:00.25 to claim the 800-freestyle relay. Stanford's A foursome was second in an NCAA B time of 7:02.19. Cal has now won seven of the last eight 800-free Pac-10 titles; the Bears had won six straight 800-free relay titles at the conference meet before taking third place in 2010.

"The medley relay was awesome," Cal head coach Teri McKeever said. "Setting the school record is a great way to start off the meet and get the momentum going. Winning the 800-free tonight – with Hannah leading us off, Kate Kastes getting her first Pac-10 championship, Erica Dagg and Sara Isakovic – it's just a special evening. We look forward to keeping the momentum going."

While Cal's 200-medley relay tonight edged its previous top time this season (1:36.79), the Bears' 800-free relay surpassed their previous fastest time of the year (7:09.14) by almost nine seconds.

The Pac-10 Championships continue on Thursday with the 11 a.m. preliminary races and the 6 p.m. finals. Tomorrow's events include the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 free, one-meter springboard and 200-free relay. The Pac-10 men's diving championships are also taking place in Federal Way, including Thursday's three-meter event.
