Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships: Day One

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina, February 16. THE Wingate University men's and women's swimming teams began the 2011 Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships Wednesday night with solid swims in the distance events. For the fifth year in a row, the Bulldog swimming teams are hosting the BMC championships at the Mecklenburg County Aquatics Center (MCAC) pool in downtown Charlotte.

The Wingate men top the team charts with 76 points. Johns Hopkins University is second with 59 points. The JHU Blue Jays lead the Wingate Bulldogs 84-83 on the women's side. Eleven women's teams and 10 men's teams scored points Wednesday night.

Wingate touched first in the 1000 Freestyle for men and women. On the women's side, sophomore Paige Schmidt (Clearwater, Fla.) defended her 1000 Freestyle title with a NCAA Division II "B" cut time of 10:19.44. The Bulldog All-American won the 2010 race in 10:20.46. Senior Kelsey Trabue (Dexter, Mich.) was fifth with a 10:36.78 clocking. Classmate Sarah Erickson (Silver Spring, Md.) was eighth with a time of 10:50.40.

Bulldog freshman Iaroslav Denysenko (Poltava, Ukraine) punched his ticket for the NCAA Division II national championship meet, winning the 1000 Freestyle with a "A" cut (and meet record) time of 9:20.09. Sophomore Cole Dutton (Surfside Beach, S.C.) was second with a "B" cut time of 9:25.66.

Both Wingate 800 Freestyle Relay teams finished second to Johns Hopkins Wednesday night. The Bulldog men posted a Division II "A" cut of 6:43.60. The JHU Blue Jays edged the Bulldogs by four one-hundredths of a second (6:43.56). Day two of the BGMC Championships is Thursday, with the preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. The finals are slated to start at 6 p.m.
