Povoa de Varzim International Meet: Aaron Opell Wins Four Over Weekend

POVOA DE VARZIM, Portugal, February 7. THE Povoa de Varzim International Meet featured a healthy mix of international talent swimming in long course meter format this weekend in Portugal.

USA's Aaron Opell downed the listed meet record in the men's 400 IM with a 4:25.14. Opell also cruised to victory in the men's 100 breast with a time of 1:03.95. Opell earned his third title with a 29.29 in the men's 50 breast. Opell won his third title of the weekend with a 2:17.73 in the men's 200 breast for the breaststroke sweep. Overall, Opell notched four wins for the weekend.

Spain's Mercedes Peris set a meet record in the women's 100 back with a time of 1:01.62, jumping to ninth in the early world rankings. She eclipsed her previous record of 1:03.05 set last year. She doubled up with another meet record, this time when she clocked a 28.36 to win the women's 50 back. That time beat her 28.68 set during prelims.

Susanna Negri downed the meet mark in the women's 400 IM with a 4:50.31. That performance lowered her 4:52.87 set last year. She also clocked a time of 4:20.77 to win the women's 400 free for her second title. Her third title came by way of a meet record in the women's 800 free with an 8:51.43. That swim lowered her previous record of 8:51.99 set last year.

Erica Buratto cleared the listed meet record in the women's 200 free with a 2:03.04, before downing the listed meet record in the women's 50 free with a 26.42. She also hit the wall in 57.56 in the women's 100 free for her third win.

Marussia Pietrocola beat the listed meet record in the women's 200 IM with a 2:18.52. Israel's Yuliya Banach touched out Pietrocola, 33.84 to 33.94, for the women's 50 breast title. Banach returned in the women's 200 breast with a 2:33.35 for the win.

Sara Freitas Oliveira captured the women's 200 fly in 2:15.38, then followed in the women's 50 fly for the win with a 28.03. She topped her third event with a butterfly sweeping 1:01.20 in the women's 100 fly.

Israel's Yakov Tan Toumarkin snared the men's 200 back crown in 2:01.11. His second victory came by way of a 56.17 in the men's 100 back.

Israel's Jonatan Kopelev raced to a win in the men's 50 back with a time of 26.05, Stefano Iacobone picked up the men's 100 fly title in 55.48, Davide Cova knocked off Israel's Tal Hanani, 2:05.18 to 2:05.40, in the men's 200 IM.

Paulo Jorge Santos grabbed the men's 50 free title in 23.69. Marco Rivera Miranda captured the men's 1500 free with a winning time of 15:51.12. He snagged his second title with a 4:01.27 in the men's 400 free.

Filippo Farinazzo pocketed the men's 100 free title in 52.14, while Paula Alexandra Oliveira raced to the win in the women's 100 breast with a 1:12.29, stopping Banach from a breaststroke sweep as Banach settled for second in 1:12.36.

Nuno Quintanilha picked up the men's 200 fly triumph with a time of 2:01.41, while Cesar Fernando Faria topped the men's 200 free in 1:54.19. Rudy Goldin earned the men's 50 fly triumph with a 25.09, while Anna Volchkov captured the women's 200 back in 2:19.28.

In relay action, Isael's Anna Volchkov, Alisa Tsypin, Yuliya Banach and Marva Harpak won the women's 400 medley in 4:18.51, while teammates Jonatan Kopelev, David Gamburg, Or Sabatier and Yakov Yan Toumarkin pocketed the men's 400 free relay title in 3:28.81.

Kopelev, Toumarkin, Yahav Shahaff and Gamburg then won the men's 400 medley relay in a 3:46.80, while Martina Marks, Nicol Samsonyk, Anat Zimin and Harpak topped the women's 400 free relay in 3:53.37.
