Virginia vs. North Carolina State

RALEIGH, North Carolina, February 5. THE Virginia men's and women's swimming and diving teams concluded the dual meet portion of the 2010-11 schedule with a victory Saturday at conference foe NC State. The No. 11 UVa women earned a 168-117 win over the Wolfpack while the 10th-ranked Cavalier men recorded a 164-125 victory.

Both UVa squads had three individuals with two event wins each. Charlotte Clarke, Lauren Perdue and Kelly Flynn won two individual events for the women while Taylor Grey, Matt McLean and Scot Robison did the same for the men.

The Virginia women started off strong with a 1-2 performance in the 200 medley relay. The team of Clarke, Flynn, Emily Lloyd and Hannah Davis collected first-place honors in a time of 1:43.74. Meredith Cavalier, Amanda Faulkner, Liz Shaw and Meredith Perdue took second in 1:44.80.

The Cavaliers went 1-2-3 in the next three events. Katya Bachrouche led the way for UVa in the 1000 freestyle (9:40.96) followed by Anne Summer Myers (9:42.61) and Rachel Naurath (10:01.54).

Lauren Perdue and Caroline Kenney each recorded NCAA 'B' marks with their performances in the 200 freestyle. Perdue won the race in 1:47.27 while Kenney touched in 1:49.75. Shaw was third with a time of 1:50.75.

Clarke, a freshman, took top honors in the 100 backstroke with a winning time of 55.77. Erika Stewart and Cavalier tied for second place in 56.73.

Flynn won the 100 breaststroke (1:03.86) and also led the way for a UVa sweep in the 100 freestyle (51.02). Kristen Moores (51.21) and Davis (52.24) finished second and third, respectively.

Perdue also won the 50 freestyle to mark her second individual event win on the afternoon. She finished first in 22.75 followed by Lloyd (23.63) in second and sister Meredith Perdue (23.65) in third.

The same trio that swept the 100 backstroke for Virginia did so in the 200 backstroke, led by Clarke's winning time of 2:01.42. Stewart was second (2:02.85) while Cavalier was third (2:04.86).

The Cavaliers also went 1-2-3 in the 200 butterfly. Naurath won the event with a time of 2:01.42. She was followed by Claire Crippen (2:0.21) and Riley Flanagan (2:03.77).

Crippen went on to win the 200 breaststroke in 2:19.78, while Kenney topped the 500 freestyle field in 4:53.67.

Senior Taylor Smith led the way for a Cavalier sweep in the 1000 freestyle early in the meet, finishing with a winning time of 9:09.50. He was followed by teammates John Snawerdt (9:12.42) and Brad Phillips (9:21.37) in second and third, respectively.

Grey was a double-event winner picking up victories in both the 100 breaststroke (56.54) and 200 breaststroke (2:01.09). Robison took top honors in the 50 freestyle (20.40) as well as the 100 freestyle (44.51) while McLean won the 200 freestyle (1:39.23) and the 500 freestyle (4:31.22).

Other event winners included Matthew Murray in the 100 backstroke (50.46) and Brady Fox in the 200 backstroke (1:48.37).

Briggy Imbriglia led the way for the Cavaliers on the boards. He won the 1-meter event with a mark of 317.10 and also took the top score in the 3-meter (359.75), but was exhibitioned.

The Cavaliers are back in action Feb. 11-13 at the Maryland Invitational in College Park, Md.
