ESSEN, Germany, February 5. A strong Germany squad took a day-one lead over a primarily young Great Britain squad at the Great Britain vs. Germany Duel in the Pool that began today. Germany leads after the first day, 105-84, in the long course meet according to reports by meet organizers.

Germany's Yannick Lebherz cruised to victory in the men's 400 IM with a 4:19.04. Britain's Joe Roebuck took second in 4:23.19 with teammate Lewis Smith grabbing third in 4:24.71.

Jaz Carlin of Britain topped the women's 800 free in 8:33.36 with teammate Megan Gilchrist capturing second in 8:42.60. Isabelle Harle posted the top German effort with a third-place 8:45.73. Carlin doubled up with a 4:09.51 in the women's 400 free. Teammate Aimee Willmott took second in 4:17.47 with Germany's Franziska Jansen earning third in 4:18.01.

Germany's Dorothea Brandt, Silke Lippok, Lisa Vitting and Daniela Schreiber led off the first session with a 1:41.52 to 1:43.39 victory in the women's 200 free relay. Great Britain's Amy Smith, Achieng Ajulu-Bushell, Ameilia Maughan and Lucy Ellis took second. Germany's Jenny Mensing, Caroline Ruhnau, Silke Lippok and Daniela Schreiber won the women's 400 medley relay in 4:09.40. Britain's Georgia Davies, Achieng Ajulu-Bushell, Jemma Lowe and Amy Smith took second in 4:10.79.

Germany's Steffen Deibler, Markus Deibler, Christoph Fildebrandt and Stefan Herbst then topped the men's 200 free relay in 1:31.82. Britain's Craig Gibbons, Robbie Renwick, James Young and Antony James took second in 1:33.70. Germany's Helge Meeuw, Hendrik Feldwehr, Steffen Deibler and Markus Deibler claimed the men's 400 medley relay in 3:41.53. Britain's Ryan Bennett, Andrew Willis, Antony James and Craig Gibbons took second in 3:44.95.

Germany's Christian Kubusch claimed the men's 800 free title in 8:10.23. Britain's Tom Allen touched a distant second in 8:13.35. Britain's Robbie Renwick captured the men's 400 free in 3:53.99. Kubusch wound up second in the middle distance affair with a 3:54.58.

Britain's Georgia Davies picked up the women's 50 back crown in 28.80, while Germany's Lisa Graf touched second in 29.31 in the sprint back. Germany swept the podium in the men's 50 back with Helge Meeuw winning in 25.80. Jan-Philip Glania (26.07) and Felix Wolf (26.40) took second and third with Britain's Ryan Bennett earning fourth in 26.68.

Germany's Caroline Ruhnau captured the women's 50 breast in 31.86 with teammates Dorothea Brandt (32.32) and Sarah Poewe (32.88) finishing second and third. Britain's Achieng Ajulu-Bushell pocketed fourth in 33.28. Hendrik Feldwehr dominated the men's 50 breast in 28.07 with Johannes Neumann taking second in 28.78. Britain's Chris Steeples placed third in 30.00.

Britain's Amy Smith won the women's 100 free in 55.46 with Germany's Silke Lippok (55.57) and Daniela Schreiber (55.71) rounding out the top three. Markus Deibler snagged the men's 100 free title in 50.14 with Britain's Craig Gibbons placing second in 51.02. Germany's Christoph Fildebrandt took third in 51.72.

Britain's Rachel Lefley captured the women's 200 back in 2:13.09 with Germany's Jenny Mensing earning second in 2:13.52. Jan-Philip Glania led a German 1-2 in the men's 200 back with a 2:01.15. Felix Wolf took second in 2:01.16, while Britain's Ryan Bennett finished third in 2:02.54.

Britain's Jemma Lowe topped the women's 100 fly in 59.86, while Germany's Sina Sutter grabbed second in 1:00.48. Franziska Hentke placed third in 1:00.99. Steffen Deibler touched in 54.38 to win the men's 100 fly for Germany. Antony James took second for Britain in 54.45.

Stacey Tadd of Britain snared the women's 200 breast crown in 2:28.79 with Germany's Caroline Ruhnau fading to second in 2:31.15. Germany's Marco Koch topped the men's 200 breast in 2:13.62 with Britain's Andrew Willis claiming second in 2:14.96.
