Southern California vs. California

BERKELEY, California, February 4. THE No. 1-ranked California men's swimming and diving team was again paced by sophomore standout Tom Shields, who won three individual events in a Pac-10 dual meet for the second time in a row, helping propel the Golden Bears to a 160-133 victory over No. 8-ranked USC Friday night (Feb. 4) at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

Cal improved its dual meet record to 3-0 with the help of Shields' victories in the 200 free (1:36.19), the 200 back (1:44.35) and the 100 fly (46.92). Back on Jan. 22, Shields (who as a freshman won the 100 fly NCAA title and was the Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year) had led the Bears in their victory over then-No. 2-ranked Arizona with wins in the 200 free, 100 fly and 200 fly.

Cal ended up winning nine of the meet's races against the Trojans, including capturing the 200 medley and placing 1-2-3 in the 100 breast, 200 breast and 100 fly. The Bears also were 1-2 in the 100 back and 100 free and swam the 200 free relay as an exhibition (winning the event in 1:19.58).

Senior sprint star Nathan Adrian was also a multiple winner, topping the field in the 50 (19.25) and 100 free (42.57). Fellow senior Graeme Moore was second in the 100 free with a time of 43.76.

Other individual winners included senior and two-time defending NCAA champion Damir Dugonjic in the 100 breast (53.67), with senior Martti Aljand placing second (54.73) and junior Nolan Koon placing third (55.32). Aljand was the meet's champion in the 200 breast (2:00.33), while Koon was second (2:00.67) and sophomore Trevor Hoyt was third (2:01.04).

Senior Guy Barnea had another strong meet as he led a 1-2 finish for Cal in the 100 back with a time of 48.61. Junior Mathias Gydesen was second with a mark of 48.65. Shields led a 1-2-3 finish for the Bears in the 100 fly with freshman Marcin Tarczynski placing second (48.50) and Gydesen third in a time of 48.54.

Cal also won the opening event, the 200 medley relay, with a time of 1:27.08 behind Barnea, Dugonjic, Moore and senior freestyler Josh Daniels.

"We responded real well with some guys swimming different events," said Cal coach David Durden. "Tom Shields was impressive in winning the 200 back and our breaststrokers did a great job going 1-2-3 in both the 100 and 200. We are still trying to figure out our best four swimmers in our relays, but all in all it was an extremely good meet for us."

Cal men's swimming and diving team's next competition will be Saturday, Feb. 5 when it hosts CS Bakersfield at 11 a.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The next Pac-10 dual meet for the Bears will be Saturday, Feb. 19 when they host Bay Area Stanford beginning at 1 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
