Hawaii, Wyoming vs. UC-San Diego

SAN DIEGO, California, January 29. THE Wyoming Cowboy and Cowgirl Swimming and Diving teams defeated the UC-San Diego Tritons and lost to the University of Hawaii Warriors on Saturday at the Canyon View Aquatic Center in San Diego, Calif.

The Cowgirls defeated the Tritons 226-72 and lost to the Warriors 155-145. Today's action brings the Cowgirls overall record to 9-4 and 3-3 in the Mountain West Conference. Also swimming in today's women's meet was San Diego State, but their scores were not counted with the Cowgirls. The Cowboys also defeated the Tritons 182-118 and lost to the Warriors 179.5-120.5, bringing the Cowboys record to 5-4 overall and 1-2 in the MWC.

"I thought we swam pretty well today," Wyoming head swimming coach Tom Johnson said. "The women were way up against Hawaii but we couldn't hold on. Losing both diving boards and some races during the middle of the meet really hurt us."

The Cowgirls won eight events during today's dual with the Tritons and the Warriors, but were not able to come away with both wins. Cowgirl Kelsey Conci was the only multiple event winner for the Cowgirls Saturday picking up wins in the 100 backstroke (56.61) and the 50 freestyle (23.68).

Johnson was very happy with the performances of Lizzie Justice in the 1000 freestyle (10:18.11) and Jessy Badaracco in the 200 butterfly (2:06.69). Other event winners for the Cowgirls include, Shelby Bull in the 200 free (1:53.16), Caroline Wells in the 200 back (2:07.20) and Paige Fischer in the 500 free (5:03.18).

The Cowgirls 200 freestyle relay team consisting of Conci, Morgan Hartigan, Kenzie Hewson and Bull also grabbed a win for the Cowgirls with a time of 1:34.90.

On the men's side the Cowboys won six events including setting three new pool records. Jayce Calhoon won the 1000 freestyle putting up a pool record time of 9:32.69. Freshman Ethan Griffel also set a pool record in the 200 free with a time of 1:40.61. Marshall Dilworth was the other Cowboy who set a pool record in the 100 backstroke (51.14).

Nate Ladner won the 100 breaststroke for the 'Pokes with a time of 57.12.

Also winning for the Cowboys was the 200 medley relay team of Dilworth, Ladner, Nick Rutecki and Jeff Frey with a time of 1:32.70.

In diving Cowboy Kyle Bogner placed first on the 1-meter springboard with a mark of 324.95 and placed second on the 3-meter (336.80).

"Jayce Calhoon was an animal for us today," Johnson added "We were swimming really well to begin the meet but about the middle of the meet we could just not get an event win.

"Now we need to get ready for CSU on Friday and Air Force on Saturday and be ready to swim better."

Cowgirl Swimming and Diving will travel to Fort Collins on Friday, Feb. 4, to race rival CSU beginning at 5 p.m. The Cowboys and Cowgirls will then host Air Force on Saturday, Feb. 5 for senior day beginning at 1 p.m.
