Florida Atlantic, Nova Southeastern vs. Florida International

NORTH MIAMI, Florida, January 29. THE FIU Swimming & Diving team swept two meets on Saturday afternoon defeating Florida Atlantic and Nova Southeastern at FIU's Biscayne Bay Campus in North Miami.

The Panthers easily defeated the Sharks 175-40, but had to win the final event against the Owls to secure the 117.50-113.50 victory.

"This was a great team win today," FIU Swimming & Diving Head Coach Randy Horner said. "All we have left is preparation for the conference meet. Momentum is always a positive thing at this time of year. Today was a great way to send out our seniors at home"

FIU's 200 free relay team of Kayla Derr, Kariann Stevens, Vicnan Torres and Kelly Grace swam a 1:38.47 to win the event and defeat FAU. It was the second fastest time this season for FIU in the event.

The Panthers other 200 free relay team of Chelsie Kidd, Colleen Quinn, Caroline Foster and Kelly Boyd took third place with a time of 1:42.96.

FIU won six events on Saturday to win its final regular season meet before the Sun Belt Conference Championships on Feb. 23.

The Panthers began the day by capturing the 200 medley relay and at the same time setting a team season-best mark. Three of the four departing seniors for FIU posted a time of 1:49.36 topping the 1:50.56 swam by the same four swimmers against Florida Gulf Coast. Seniors Danielle Sneir, Erin Pavlick and Yesica Rojas, along with junior Mariangela Macchiavello comprised the record-setting quartet.

Macchiavello continued her fine work in the 50 yard freestyle taking first place in the event with a time of 25.03. Stevens was second with a mark of 25.18.

Freshman Sabrina Beaupre swept both diving events. Beaupre captured the 1-meter dive with a score of 279.83. She would win the 3-meter dive with 258.70 points.

Sneir set a team and season-best time in the 100 yard backstroke. Sneir won the event with a time of 58.63 which surpassed her season-best of 59.68 in the season opening meet against Florida State and FAU.

It was the final meet at FIU for four Panthers seniors. FIU honored Pavlick, Joanna Pomerantz, Rojas and Sneir before the meet.

FIU will now have a little less than month to prepare for the Sun Belt Championships, which take place in Dallas, Texas from Feb. 23-26.
