Colgate, Vermont vs. Binghamton

VESTAL, New York, January 22. THE Binghamton swimming and diving program honored 11 seniors as the team swam in its final home meet of the season Saturday afternoon. The Bearcat men defeated Colgate while the women beat Vermont, but fell to Colgate at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center. The men defeated Colgate 166-111, as the women won 178.5-121.5 over Vermont and lost 196-104 to Colgate.

"I was really proud of the way our seniors came out and performed today," head coach Sean Clark said. "Especially after swimming four meets in nine days. It was a sad day but, I can't express how impressed I am with this group of seniors. The team really put in a strong effort and gave the home crowd a nice performance. "
The men started off the meet quickly winning the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:37.27. The senior foursome of Kevin Kearney, Phil Dzieniszewski, Ziyad Rohana and Jason Chen got things going in the right direction for the Bearcats. Kearney was a dual winner on the day, taking first place in both backstroke events. He won the 100 back with a time of 54.26 and the 200 in a time of 1:55.79.

Chen closed out his last meet at the Patricia A. Saunders Aquatic Center in style by breaking the pool record in the 200 IM, supplanting Brenno Varanda's time of 1:54.56. Chen set the new pool record with a time of 1:53.03 with no other swimmer remotely close to him, winning the race by more than six seconds. He also won the 100 free with a time of 47.80.

"From day one when Jason (Chen) saw that record he wanted," coach Clark continued. "I told him it would be very difficult to break, but he continued to work every year and now its his."

Dzieniszewski finished his home career with a win as well. He swam to a first place finish in the 50 free with a time of 53.11. Juniors Joe Perez-Rogers and Nolan Slesnick helped their seniors go out in fashion by tallying a couple of wins.
