Maryland vs. West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, West Virginia, January 22. THE West Virginia men's swimming and diving completed their dual meet season with a 213-87 victory over Maryland on Saturday afternoon in the WVU Natatorium. The women fell to the Terrapins by a score of 202-96. The meet also served as Senior Day with Caroline Larsson, Maggie Moreland, Jeff Byrd and George Farquhar swimming in their final home meets.

"I was very pleased with how both teams finished all of their races today," coach Vic Riggs said. We were able to come-from-behind on a number of swims and showed our resiliency.

"I'm really proud of the ladies as they raced well and missing three of our individuals certainly added to the challenge. With this being the last meet for the men, on paper, we were prepared for a close competition. I'm proud of how the men swam their races today winning all of the events."

The women swept the 1000 free with Kata Fodor placing first (10:15.24), Sloan Storie second (10:34.48) and Larsson in third place (10:34.88). Tim O'Malley continued the winning ways with a win himself in the 1000 free in 9:47.25.

Fodor was then able to swim to second place (1:52.21) on short rest in the 200 free, while Hugh Simmonds had a come-from-behind win for the men in 1:42.30. Jake Querciagrossa placed third (1:44.05), while Farquhar and Zach Chow finished fourth (1:44.85) and fifth (1:45.56), respectively.

The men continued their string of first-place finishes with Jared Goldthorpe taking first in 52.04 in the 100 back. Brandon Carr swam to second place (52.37) in the same event.

Jaryn Studer and Melissa Schreiber each had strong showings in the 100 breast with Studer placing second (1:07.46) and Schreiber in third (1:07.68). The men then swept the event with Farquhar placing first (57.60), Jack Greenhalgh second (58.98) and Graham Kauffman third (59.58).

Rachael Burnett had a strong showing in the 200 fly, placing second in 2:05.59, while the men continued to impress with Taylor Camp placing first in 1:50.16.

The 50 free was led by Eva Burlingham from the women's side who came in third place (25.19). For the men, Tim Squires earned the victory in 20.72, while Brad Eichenseer was in a close second (21.23).

Squires and Eichenseer again finished first (46.35) and second (46.90) in the 100 free, respectively.

Nikki Vetterlein had a successful third-place finish (2:08.60) for the women in the 200 back, while Goldthorpe was able to take first (1:51.19) in the 200 back. Querciagrossa also swam the event placing third (1:55.07).

Schreiber and Studer swapped places, this time in the 200 breast. Schreiber went 2:24.05 for second place, while Studer finished in third in 2:24.66. Farquhar won his second event of the day on the men's side with a first-place finish (2:06.94) in the 200 breast. Greenhalgh finished second for the men in 2:10.33.

Burnett earned her first victory in the 500 free with a time of 4:54.31, while Fodor was able to place second (5:01.65) and Danielle Smith third (5:09.90). Simmonds also scored his second victory with a time of 4:42.72 in the 500 free. O'Malley followed close behind with a second-place finish in 4:44.89.

Camp then was able to earn his second victory of the afternoon in the 100 fly with a time of 49.51. Camp extended his undefeated streak in the 100 fly this season.

Burnett scored her final individual victory in come-from-behind fashion in the 400 IM with a time of 4:24.26. Querciagrossa had a thrilling victory in come-from-behind fashion as well. Querciagrossa scored his first collegiate victory in a time of 4:06.09.

Both men's relays had victories with Camp, Farquhar, Carr and Squires finished the 200 medley relay in 1:32.06. Camp, Squires, Chow and Eichenseer finished the meet with a victory in the 200 free relay in a time of 1:23.63.

The diving well saw multiple broken records with Matt O'Neill winning the 1-meter with a school record 358.42 points. Richard Pokorny placed second with a score of 339.90 points. Kelsey Palis scored fourth place for the women with 215.55 points.

O'Neill then won the 3-meter with a score of 354.30. Pokorny again finished second with 326.40 points.

The meet was the final one before BIG EAST Championships for the men, while the women will host Ohio on Saturday, Jan. 29, at noon in the WVU Natatorium.
