Stanford vs. Arizona

TUCSON, Arizona, January 21. THE top-ranked Stanford women (5-0) dominated on the first leg of its trip to the desert, winning 12 of 14 swim events at No. 7-ranked Arizona (6-2) and scoring a 178-114 dual win in the process.

Senior Liz Smith led the way for the Cardinal, sweeping both breaststrokes, before taking home the top time in the 400 individual medley to close out the individual events. Smith won the 100-yard event with a time of 1:02.28 and then went onto win the 200-yard event with a mark of 2:12.68. In the 400 IM, Smith posted a time of 4:16.43.

Smith also was a part of the winning 400 yard medley relay team that posted a time of 3:38.74 to begin the meet.

Showing the Cardinal's dominance on the day, Stanford finished 1-2 in seven events, won 12 of 16 events overall and finished with the second-fastest time in the 1000 free and 200 free relay.

Senior Kate Dwelley finished in the top-three in all three freestyles, winning the 100 (49.44) and 200 (1:46.91) events, before a runner-up finish in the 50 free (22.78) to teammate Sam Woodward (22.70).

Freshman Andie Taylor picked up victories in the 200 fly (1:58.26) and 500 free (4:46.76) and was second to Dwelley in the 200 free, 14 tenths slower than her veteran teammate (1:47.05).

In diving, Meg Hostage was second in the one-meter (276.45) and third in the three-meter (274.28).

Stanford concludes its trip through the Grand Canyon State with a trip to Arizona State on Saturday.

No one expected anything less between these two Pac-10 powerhouses. No. 3-ranked Stanford (3-0) picked up a close 155-143 win over No. 2-ranked Arizona (2-2) paced by two wins a piece by sprinter Alex Coville, miler Chad La Tourette, diver Brent Eichenseer and Austin Staab.

Coville and Aaron Wayne finished 1-2 in both the 50 and 100 freestyles, giving the Cardinal a combined 26 points, with Coville firing off times of 20.18 in the shorter distance and a time of 44.51 in the 100-yard event. Wayne chipped in times of 20.27 and 44.63, respectively.

La Tourette, who holds the nation's fastest times in the 1000 and 1650 events, posted a win in the 1000 free with a mark of 9:14.67, about 18 seconds slower than his time in November and a time of 4:31.71 in the 500-yard race.

Eichenseer and teammate Taylor Sishc each finished 1-2 in the two diving events, giving the Cardinal an additional 26 points thanks to nine points a piece with wins by Eichenseer in the one (325.65) and three-meter (329.48) and Sishc's four points a piece in the one (294.98) and three-meter (313.35).

Staab finish first in the 200 free with a time of 1:37.76 and then won his signature event, the 100 fly with a time of 47.93, seven tenths ahead of teammate Bobby Bollier (48.66).

Michael Zoldos twice finished in the top-three, finishing second to La Tourette in the 1000 free with a mark of 9:23.26 and third in the shorter freestyle of 500 yards with a mark of 4:35.22.

Stanford concludes its trip through the Grand Canyon State with a trip to Arizona State on Saturday.
