UNLV vs. Wyoming

LARAMIE, Wyoming, January 15. THE University of Wyoming Swimming and Diving teams split with the UNLV Rebels Saturday afternoon in Corbett Pool.

The Cowgirls defeated the Rebels, 187-113, improving their dual record to 8-0 and 3-0 in the Mountain West Conference, while the loss drops the Rebels to 3-5 and 1-2 in the MWC. The No. 16 ranked UNLV men's team defeated the Cowboys 161-133. The loss drops UW to 2-3 and 0-2 in the MWC, while the victory brings UNLV to 5-1 and 2-0 in the MWC.

"The girls were very dominating from the beginning of the meet," Wyoming head swimming coach Tom Johnson said. "It was great to see Lesley (Young) and Kelsey have great days."

The Cowgirls began the day with a two second victory in the 200 Medley Relay and never looked back winning a total of 11 events. The 200 Medley Relay team consisting of Kelsey Conci, Lesley Young, Stephanie Vint and Shelby Bull won the first event with a time of 1:45.35. Multiple event winners for the Cowgirls included, Conci winning the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.81, which is just one-hundredth of a second behind her pool record time. Conci also won the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.49. Young picked up three wins for the Cowgirls in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.02, the 200 breast with a time of 2:22.05 and in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:09.77. Bull also picked up multiple wins for the Cowgirls in the 100 and 200 freestyle, she took first in the 100 with a time of 53.29, as well as winning the 200 with a time of 1:55.12. Vint also picked up a win for the Cowgirls in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:07.66.

"The men swam a top 16 team today and never gave up," added Johnson. "I thought we had some really good performances today I think we are stepping in the right direction."

On the men's side the Cowboys hung well with the Rebels for very much of the meet, but came up short in the end. Event winners for the Cowboys include, Brandon Fischer who was the Cowboys only multiple event winner on the day. Fischer won the 200 breast with a time of 2:05.26 and the 200 IM with a time of 1:56.59. Other event winners for the Cowboys were Ethan Griffel in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:41.17, Tyler Kybartas in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:56.31, and Nathan Fuller in the 200 back with a time of 1:52.67.

Taking place before today's swim meet was the diving rounds in which the Cowboys and Cowgirls won three of the four boards, including setting a new pool record. Cowboy Mark Murdock set a new Corbett Pool Record on the 1-meter springboard with a mark of 361.58. Coming in second on the 1-meter was Kyle Bogner with a mark of 328.73, followed by Valentin Schwarz and Derek Campbell with marks of 261.23 and 205.65, respectively. Murdock also won today's 3-meter round with a score of 370.20. Again Bogner followed him with a score of 334.28. Campbell and Schwarz placed third and fourth with scores of 268.13 and 258.60.

"I think Mark has had that list in him all year and today he brought it together," UW diving coach Pat Bukowski said. "Next week we need to be even better, with a national champion diving for BYU."

On the Women's side Cowgirl Allie Smith placed first on the 3-meter board with a mark of 306.38 over 50 points ahead of her nearest competitor. Carolyn Wallace placed second on the 3-meter with a mark of 234.53, while Sasha Andrie, Amanda Fay and Jade Lubeck placed fifth, sixth and seventh with marks of 214.13, 211.13 and 202.20, respectively. On the 1-meter board Rebel Mariah Skeen placed first with a mark of 290.48. Smith placed second with a mark of 266.48. Andrie, Wallace, Lubeck and Fay placed fourth through seventh on the 1-meter springboard. Three Corbett Pool Records fell today with the only two swimming records going to UNLV swimmers. Rebel Cody Roberts broke the pool record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.13, while Anja Crawford broke the pool record in the 200 back with a time of 2:04.92.

"I think we need to be really hot and ready to go next weekend against BYU and Utah," Johnson added. "Every week now gets tougher and it will be good for us going into conference."

Next up for Wyoming Swimming and Diving will be a road trip to Utah to take on the Utah Utes and the BYU Cougars this up coming weekend. Wyoming will first swim against Utah on Friday, Jan. 21 beginning at 5 p.m. The next day, Jan. 22 they will make the trip to Provo, Utah to take on the BYU Cougars beginning at 1 p.m.
