Colgate vs. Cornell

ITHACA, New York, January 15. THE Cornell men's swimming and diving team won its fourth straight dual meet and improved to 5-2 on the season with a 149-127 victory on Saturday afternoon at Teagle Pool. Cornell won 12 of the 16 contested events.

In the morning diving session, Phillip Truong and Jonathan Zollo each finished 1-2, though in different order, in their two events. It was Truong finishing first in the 1-meter (275.40), while Zollo was first in the 3-meter (298.35).

Cornell opened the swimming portion of the meet by finishing first and second in the 200 medley relay, with the winning team made up of Jake Sangren, Jake Fisher, Ben Catanese and William Mendelson in a time of 1:37.23. After two freshmen and a sophomore made up the winning opening relay squad, it was senior Dean Holcomb picking up a first place in the 400 IM in a easy 4:01.32, nearly nine seconds ahead of the runner-up from Colgate.

Freshman Scott Henry continued the youth movement for the Big Red, winning th 200 free after touching the wal in 1:44.67, a second faster than his closest competitor. Catanese made it a perfect 6-for-6 in event wins as the freshman led a 1-2-3 sweep of the 100 back, with his time of 52.64 outlasting Mendelson.

The 100 breast saw Cornell again take the top two spots, with Steve Kwartler touching first in 59.39 in front of Fisher, the runner-up in 1:00.06.

The Raiders picked up their first win of the meet in the 200 fly, but Cornell's Austin Taylor (1:56.02) and Taylor Wilson (1:56.27) placed second and third to scoop up seven more team points. A close-fought win by Christopher Myers in the 50 free (21.63) all but clinched the win, giving the Big Red a 122-41 lead in the meet.

A pair of upperclassmen went 1-2 in the 100 free, with Zac Mijares-Shafai narrowly touching the wall in front of Chris Keady with just .33 separating them. Mijares-Shafai posted a 47.48 in the win.

Catanese won his third total event by capturing the 200 back in 1:55.18, while Mendelson grabbed third in 2:00.34. Though swimming as a non-scoring exhibition competitor, Julian Chan's time of 2:08.42 in the 200 breast was good for a first place, as was Cody Vitez in the 500 free (4:43.36).

After the Raiders captured the top two spots in the 100 fly, freshman Harry Harpham took a strong second in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.40. Cornell closed out the meet with a second-place effort in the 400 free relay as Scott, Brazitis, Tyghe Speidel and Myers hit the wall in 3:2.49.

Colgate used its superior depth in several key races to earn a 169-130 victory over Cornell in women's swimming and diving action on Saturday afternoon at Teagle Gymnasium. The Big Red slipped to 1-6 with the loss.

The morning diving session had freshman Bonita Herlitz-Ferguson placing second in both the 1-meter (243.97) and 3-meter (247.42) diving competitions.

Once swimming began, the Big Red finished just a second off a pool record in the 200 medley relay, as Emily Dean, Jessie Holley, Chiara Spinazzola and Sadie Ellison nearly broke their own record in the event with a 1:47.45 to place first.

Freshman Sara Schlichte was third in the 1000 free (10:30.97)and Kim Summers reached the podium with a third-place in the 200 free (1:57.10).

Spinazzola continued her monster season with a win in the 100 back (58.18), while Dean was third in 58.98 in a tightly bunched group. Holley then led a 1-2 Cornell sweep with Kim Jerome in the 100 breast. Holley's time of 1:05.06 bested Jerome by exactly a second.

The 200 fly saw Christina DiMaria place third (2:08.17) in the 8th event of the night as the Raiders regained the team lead. Cornell regained the edge (89-79) thanks to a 1-2-3 sweep of the 50 free, as Ellison (24.79), Ali Guba (24.91) and Kelsey Rossi (25.16) collected 16 big team points for the home school.

Spinazzola (53.56) and Guba (52.61) went 2-3 in the 100 free as the top three finishers all touched within .11. Dean was the runner-up in the 200 back (2:07.17) as the Raiders tied up the meet in the 12th event of the night, then went ahead for good after the 500 free completed a 1-2-3 Colgate sweep.

Stephanie Al-Quah (57.77) and Dean (58.68) placed second and third in the 100 fly, while Jerome was fourth in the 200 IM (2:11.45) to finish off the individual races.

In the 400 free, the team of Rossi, Guba, Ellison and Spinazzola placed a close second in 3:35.72
