Northern Arizona, Oregon State vs. Arizona

TUCSON, Arizona, January 7. THE University of Arizona women's swimming and diving team notched two victories Friday afternoon, topping Northern Arizona and Oregon State in a double dual meet at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.

The Cats claimed the opening 200 medley relay event when the foursome of Sarah Denninghoff, Chelsey Salli, Aubrey Peacock and Margo Geer recorded a 1:43.96 for the win.

Susana Helms had a stellar afternoon in the distance freestyle events, winning both the 1650 and 500 free titles. Helms went a 4:57.75 in the 500 free and 17:02.16 in the 1650 free.

Other multiple event winners for the Wildcats included freshmen Geer, Denninghoff, Eve Sarris and Aubrey Peacock.

Peacock, a freshman from Jacksonville, Fla., showed off her versatility winning the 100 free, 100 fly and 100 back. For scoring purposes, her 100 free and 100 fly events were later exhibitioned.

Geer, who owns the second-fastest time in the nation in the 50, swam a 23.43 in the event as she was followed in the event by second place finisher, Denninghoff.

Sarris posted times of 1:05.44 and 2:21.98 in the 100 breast and 200 breast, respectively for the event wins.

Hannah Ross had a solid showing in the backstroke events, winning the 200 in 2:02.31 and placing runner-up in the 100 in 56.65.

In diving competition, freshman Samantha Pickens won both the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions with scores of 354.08 and 371.10, respectively. Junior Ainsley Oliver was third in each competition with a 311.70 in the 1-meter and 343.20 in the 3-meter as well.

In the final relay to close the afternoon, the Arizona "C" relay team won the 400 free relay in 3:35.77, but later exhibitioned the event.

Since neither Oregon State or NAU has a men's program, the UA men's team split its team equally and competed in an intrasquad dual competition. The sides were split according to the men's captains Cory Chitwood and Rob Iddiols.

Team Chitwood seemed favored to win by a landslide, but Iddiols' bunch made things interesting by taking a three-point lead into the final 400 free relay. Chitwood's relay squad of Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or, Cam Owen, Nick Hadinger and Kelley Wyman just out-touched Iddiols' team for the overall win.

In the race breakdown, Chitwood and Wyman each won three events, while A.J. Tipton led Team Iddiols with three wins on the afternoon as well.
