FINA World Short Course Championships: Ryan Lochte Downs American Record, Takes Run at World Record in 200 Back

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, December 19. USA's Ryan Lochte nearly posted his third world record of the meet on the board in the men's 200 back at the FINA World Short Course Championships.

Lochte blazed a time of 1:46.68 in the distance dorsal, downing his American record of 1:47.91 set in 2008. He dominated the top-ranked time of 1:49.48 set by Arkady Vyatchanin in Berlin this year, and nearly tracked down Vyatchanin's global standard of 1:46.11 set in Berlin in Nov. 2009. Lochte, along with Vyatchanin, are the only swimmers to clear 1:47 in the event with George Du Rand standing third in the rankings with a 1:47.08. Notably, Lochte also bettered the meet record of 1:47.84 set by Markus Rogan in 2008.

USA's Tyler Clary earned second-place honors with a time of 1:49.09, while Rogan completed the podium with a third-place 1:49.96.

Spain's Aschwin Wildeboer Faber (1:50.01), Japan's Ryosuke Irie (1:50.18), Poland's Radoslaw Kawecki (1:50.90) and Canada's Jake Tapp (1:52.56) finished fourth through seventh, while Italy's Damiano Lestingi was disqualified.
