FINA World Short Course Championships: Naoya Tomita Clears Asian,Meet Record in Triumphant 200 Breast

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, December 17. JAPAN's Naoya Tomita edged Hungary's Daniel Gyurta in the men's 200 breast en route to an Asian and meet record at the FINA World Short Course Championships.

Tomita checked in with a 2:03.12 to crush Gyurta's meet mark of 2:04.46 set earlier in the meet. Tomita clipped his top-ranked effort of 2:03.18 set at the Tokyo stop of the World Cup that also stood as the Asian and Japanese record. Tomita remained just behind Ed Moses (2:02.92) for sixth on the all time charts.

Gyurta clocked a 2:03.47 for second-place honors this evening to move to second in the rankings, while Australia's Brenton Rickard grabbed third overall in 2:04.33.

Germany's Marco Koch (2:05.15), South Africa's Neil Versfeld (2:05.15), Russia's Grigory Falko (2:05.28), France's Hugues Duboscq (2:05.68) and USA's Eric Shanteau (2:05.86) also vied for the championship title.
