DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, December 17. THE Netherlands swept the top two spots in the women's 100 free at the FINA World Short Course Championships.

Ranomi Kromowidjojo set a meet record with a sterling time of 51.45. That performance erased the 52.17 set by both Marleen Veldhuis and Therese Alshammar in 2008 and earlier this meet, respectively. Kromowidjojo, however, has been faster this year with a top-ranked effort of 51.44 at the European Short Course Championships.

The Netherlands' Femke Heemskerk checked in with a second-place time of 52.18, short of her second-ranked season best of 51.96 from the Berlin stop of the World Cup in October. USA's Natalie Coughlin lowered her American record with a third-place time of 52.25. That swim eclipsed the 52.27 she set during prelims, but came up short of the un-ratified top time by an American in the event as Dana Vollmer posted a 52.16 during the Duel in the Pool last December. USA Swimming elected to not ratify any techsuit swims after domestically implementing its ban in Oct. 2009, even though the swims were legitimate according to FINA rules until FINA banned the techsuit worldwide on Jan. 1, 2010.

France's Camille Muffat (52.41), Canada's Victoria Poon (52.51), Australia's Marieke Guehrer (52.81), USA's Vollmer (52.95) and Australia's Emma McKeon (53.10) also competed in the finale.
