FINA Short Course World Championships: Stanislav Donets Wins 100 Backstroke; Camille Lacourt Takes Silver After Initially Drawing DQ

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, December 16. STANISLAV Donets almost dipped under the magical 49-second barrier with a winning time of 49.07 in the final of the 100 backstroke, just missing Nick Thoman's world record of 48.94 set last year and his own lifetime best of 48.97, which had stood as the world record for a few days last year. The time also breaks the meet record of 49.62 he swam in the prelims.

Immediately after the race, France's Camille Lacourt was disqualified for staying underwater past the 15-meter mark on the final turn, according to sources. The French delegation appealed the decision, with the stroke and turn official rescinding the DQ after mistakenly identifying Lacourt as the swimmer he saw submerged past 15 meters. Reports say the official later named Ryosuke Irie of Japan as the swimmer who should have been disqualified, but official results list Irie with a fifth-place time of 50.55, so he was not retroactively given the DQ.

With the back-and-forth of Lacourt's DQ, Aschwin Wildeboer of Spain moved from the silver medal spot on the podium to the bronze with his time of 50.04. That knocked Thoman off the podium into fourth place with his 50.38.

David Plummer (50.59), Jeremy Stravius (50.79) and Guilherme Guido (50.91) rounded out the field.
