Dutch Short Course Championships: Men’s Relay National Record Downed

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands, December 4. ANOTHER Dutch relay record took a tumble during the second night of the Dutch Short Course Championships held in Amsterdam.

Stefan de Die (49.27), Joeri Verlinden (48.36), Bas van Velthoven (48.55) and Joost Reijns (48.08) downed the men's 400 free relay Dutch record with a time of 3:14.26. That swim eclipsed the 3:14.60 set last year in Amsterdam.

Joeri Verlinden raced to the men's 100 fly victory in 50.96. He's been faster this year with the second-ranked 50.52 at the European Short Course Championships last month. Jurjen Willemsen finished a distant second in 53.13, while Damien Bernard touched third in 53.41.

Marleen Veldhuis claimed the women's 100 fly title in 58.07 to move to 15th in the world rankings. Training partner Hinkelien Schreuder touched second in 58.35 to tie for 21st in the rankings. Willemijn Knot rounded out the podium with a third-place 1:00.13.

Schreduer returned in the women's 50 back with a winning 27.33. That swim fell short of her 12th-ranked season best of 27.22 set at the Singapore stop of the World Cup. Knot finished behind Schreuder in the second straight event with a second-place 28.42, while Maaike de Waard set a National Age Group record for 14 year olds with a third-place 28.71.

Moniek Nijhuis surfaced triumphant from the women's 200 breast in 2:24.57. That effort pushed her to 23rd in the world rankings. Tessa Bouwer earned second in 2:26.80, while Lona Kroese finished third in 2:28.14.

In an exciting finale, Devi Wolthuizen edged Sebas van Lith and Bram Dekker, 2:12.32 to 2:12.57 and 2:12.59, for the men's 200 breast crown. A day after setting a Dutch national record, Nick Driebergen touched out Bastiaan Lijesen, 24.58 to 24.60, for the men's 50 back win. Willemsen completed the top three in 24.72.

Jens Bakker lowered his Dutch junior record with a time of 4:22.27 for the men's 400 IM victory. That swim cleared his 4:23.28 set in October. Davy Verreussell (4:23.35) and van Lith (4:28.54) finished second and third.

Sharon van Rouwendaal topped the women's 200 free in 1:57.03, while Wendy van der Zanden took second in 1:58.00. Ilse Kraayeveld claimed third in 1:58.59. Stefan de Die clipped Joost Reijns, 1:45.71 to 1:45.79, in the men's 200 free. Bas van Velthoven wound up third in 1:46.65.

Marieke Nijhuis snagged the women's 800 free title in 8:43.34. Marion van den Berg touched second in 8:49.61, while Leonie van Noort took third in 8:55.29.

In relay action, Kira Toussaint, Willemijm Knot, Moniek Nijhuis and Lona Kroese won the women's 400 medley relay in 4:04.04.
