Niagara vs. Buffalo

BUFFALO, New York, November 13. THE University at Buffalo men's and women's swimming and diving teams rolled to easy victories as the Bulls defeated Niagara on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena Natatorium. The UB men remained perfect at 4-0 with a 152-85 win over the Purple Eagles while the UB women evened their mark at 2-2 with a 146-90 decision.

In the men's meet, the Bulls scored a pair of double winners. Josh Meints swept the distance freestyle races. Meints took the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.16 and also won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:53.20. Cory Zorsch won the 50-yard freestyle in 21.56 and claimed the 100-yard butterfly in 50.24. Meints also swam the opening leg of UB's winning 200-yard medley relay team which finished in 1:35.24.

Other individual winners for the UB men included Phil Aronica in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:52.96. Matt Hogan won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:58.30. Mike Dugan won the 100-yard freestyle in 47.11. Chris Waldock won the 100-yard backstroke in 54.71. Kenny Rhoades set a season best as took the three-meter diving event with a six-dive total of 363.60 points.

For the UB women, Alie Schirmers won both the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races. She claimed the 200-yard race in 1:57.93 and then returned to win the 500-yard freestyle in 5:12.39. Karly Moore swept the sprint freestyle races. Moore won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.42 and the 100-yard freestyle in 53.53. Ava Giachino was a double winner in the diving competitions. Giachino won the one-meter springboard with 231.95 points and set a season-best total of 268.90 points to win the three-meter event.

Winning individual events for the UB women were Katelyn Pratt-Collins, Emma Miller and Marissa Murphy. Pratt-Collins won the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.22 while Miller won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:52.28. Murphy claimed the 100-yard backstroke in 59.72. Pratt-Collins swam the opening leg while Murphy swam the anchor leg as the Bulls also won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:51.37.

The men's and women's divers will next compete at the University of Arizona's Wildcat Invitational next weekend. The full squad returns to the water for the Zippy Invitational at the University of Akron on December 3.
