Pacific Lutheran vs. Linfield

McMINNVILLE, Oregon, November 12. PACIFIC Lutheran won nine out of 11 events in both the women's and men's competition on Friday night in sweeping away host Linfield in the Northwest Conference swimming dual meet opener for both teams.

It was a dominating performance by frosh Kina Ackerman, who won three events in the PLU women's 143-62 victory. On the men's side, frosh Kevin Jones and sophomore Chase Mesford both had a pair of individual event wins as the Lutes cruised, 139-64.

Both teams opened and closed the meet with relay victories. In the opening women's 200 medley relay, the team of Darla Avis, Cell Grannum, Casey Jackson and Elisabeth Simpson won in a time of 1:55.75. In the final event, the 200 freestyle relay, Gina Wittman, Elizabeth Althauser, Avis and Casey Jackson combined for a winning 1:46.09. In the men's 200 medley relay, Jones, Rayan Carter, Matthew Kim and Phil Rempe clocked a 1:43.03, and in the concluding 200 freestyle relay it was Alex Limoges, Trevor Olson, Kim and Mesford touching out in 1:33.05.

In between were seven individual event winners in both divisions. Ackerman opened with a winning 1000 freestyle time of 11:07.62, and shortly thereafter Jessie Klauder led a 1-2-3- PLU finish (Klauder, Althauser, Wittman) in the 200 freestyle with a winning 2:01.55. Ackerman then won the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:19.61, and Klauder followed with a 56.12 to take the 100 freestyle.

Jackson was the next winner, leading a 1-2-3 finish (Jackson, Avis, Hanna Rankin) in the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:01.46, followed by Ackerman's third win, a 5:28.93 in the 500 freestyle. The final PLU individual event winner was Grannum, who took the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:10.77.

Jones won the distance freestyle events for the PLU men, starting with a 10:29.40 in the 1000 and later adding a 5:06.17 in the 500. Mesford clocked 1:52.77 to take the 200 freestyle, and later he led a 1-2-3 Lutes finish (Mesford, Olson, Kyle Parnell) in the 100 freestyle with a winning 50:41.

The PLU men showed up in dominating fashion with the top four finishers in the 100 butterfly. Phil Rempe was the event winner with a 54.18, followed by Limoges, Garrett Hallett and Kim. Limoges was the other event winner, taking the 100 backstroke with a time of 58.80.

Pacific Lutheran returns to Northwest Conference action at 1 p.m. Saturday when it swims against the host Willamette Bearcats in Salem, Ore.
