Ashland vs. Indianapolis -- November 6, 2010

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, November 6. THE University of Indianapolis men's and women's swimming and diving teams won a combined 17 events against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival Ashland during The Pink Meet at the Ruth Lilly Center Pool on Saturday afternoon.

The Greyhound men lost, 147-134, and the women fell, 143-128, but UIndy had the upper-hand in the swimming.

"We swam well enough to overcome the 32-0 deficit that we had with Ashland having three divers in women and men," head coach Gary Kinkead said. "To over come that deficit and to lose by less than 32 points is an awesome accomplishment."

Winners on the men's side were Justin Klopp, Musaffer Demitras, Guy Kogel and Nikolas Aresti in 1:35.12 in the 200-yard medley relay, Baris Ilhan in the 1000-yard freestyle in 9:59.78, Austin Biefnes in 54.02 in the 100-yard backstroke and 4:16.45 in the 400-yard IM, Demitras in 57.95 in the 100-yard breaststroke, Kogel in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:52.02 and 100-yard butterfly in 50.43 and Aresti in 21.14 in the 50-yard freestyle and 47.98 in the 100-yard freestyle.

"Neither of the teams were rested and they did not put together their best men's line up and our guys were focused on doing well," Kinkead said. "Ashland had to make several changes to their line up in the last several events to win the meet. Our guys fought with a lot of heart."

Winners on the women's side were Maura Donahue in 10:57.26 in the 1000-yard freestyle, 5:14.02 in the 500-yard freestyle and 1:55.82 in the 200-yard freestyle, Amber Cooper in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.09, 200-yard breaststroke in 2:25.35 and 400-yard IM in 4:45.42, Julia Madeira in the 100-yard freestyle in 53.46 and Kristin Howdyshell in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:00.39.

"The women swam extremely well. The Ashland 200-free relay is the defending national champion and all four of their women are back this year. Our women challenged them to the last wall," Kinkead said.

UIndy is back in the pool next weekend at IUPUI in the House of Champions meet on Friday and Saturday.
