Fresno State vs. Washington State

PULLMAN, Washington, November 6. THE Washington State University swim team defeated Fresno State by a score of 165-96 in head-to-head action, Saturday at Gibb Pool.

The Cougars led from start to finish but the Bulldogs kept within reaching distance until WSU swimmers went 1-2-3 in back-to-back events. Shelbi Luchini, Emily Fenster and Lora Lougee finished in the top three spots of the 500 freestyle, respectively, while Talor Whitaker, Emma Johansson and Kelsey Bruggman did the same in the 100 butterfly.

Whitaker led the WSU squad with 22 individual points for the second consecutive meet. The senior finished first in the 200 individual medley in addition to her win in the 100 butterfly.

Johansson and Rugile Mileisyte both had individual victories and finished with 13 points, Friday. Johansson earned her win in the 200 butterfly while Mileisyte touched the wall first in the 100 freestyle.

Lougee and Jennifer Dean each made strong contributions to the Cougar victory as well. Lougee had been battling an illness over the past few weeks, but came out strong to win the 100 freestyle. Dean notched her first-place finish in the 200 freestyle.

The Cougars earned 22 points for their wins in the both relay events. The 400 medley relay team of Danielle Palumbo, Jessie Craig, Whitaker and Mileisyte finished first in a time of 3:52.76. The team of Evelina Bieleckaite, Melissa Bogert, Dean and Mileisyte emerged victorious in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:35.34, finishing one tenth of a second behind the Gibb Pool record.

WSU remains undefeated in dual-meet competitions at 4-0. The Cougars will be pack in the pool, Friday Nov. 12, as they take on the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks at Gibb Pool. Events are scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
"I think we still want to be making some steps next weekend against Northern Arizona but I think we are in a good place," said WSU head Coach Erica Quam. "I just want to continue to see them train and continue to see the improvements in practice. If we can do that, and put those things in the meet, I think we will see some good performances at Princeton."
