Goucher vs. Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C., October 30. THE CUA swim teams swept conference rival Goucher on Saturday afternoon as the men scored a 173-81 victory and the women took home a 170-87 win. Caleb Capozella had a terrific day with three wins, while Joanna Ladas and Lisa Brooks both won three events for the women.

On the men's side, Justin Kenyon won the 1000 free with a time of 10:45.54, and he also took first in the 500 free in 5:12.30. Zachary Hutton placed second in the 500 free.

Pat Flannery touched first in the 200 free, finishing in 1:52.34 and later added a first place finish in the 200 butterfly.

Capozella picked up right where he left off on Friday with a first place finish in the 100 backstroke, the 200 backstroke and the 200 IM, and Dominic Grillo won the 50 free with a time of 22.55 as well as the 100 butterfly, crossing in 56.92.

Evan Hundley and Chris Ryan took the top two spots in the 100 breaststroke and Brian Jones and Brendan Place did the same in the 100 free.

In men's relay action, the 400 freestyle team consisting of Brian Jones, Stephen Henderson, Flannery and Grillo narrowly edged out the Goucher contingent in a down-to-the-wire race. The Cardinals finished in 3:25.45, just in front of the Gophers, who crossed in 3:26.69.

Meanwhile in women's action, Ladas continued her strong start to her career with a first place finish in the 1000 free, as she finished in 11:03.43, and she also won the 500 free, finishing in front of second place finisher Rachel Berry.

Berry also finished second in the 200 butterfly, with Gabby Giambago taking first in that event. Giambago also won the 200 IM with a time of 2:24.56, while Emily Nguyen was next in line, finishing in 2:32.54.

Shannon Silsby and Kristen Gunn placed one-two in the 100 backstroke to earn the Cardinals nine and four points, respectively, and Silsby and Annie Cannatella did the same in the 100 free.

Brooks posted a first place finish in the 100 breaststroke crossing in front of teammate Chelsea Hewitt in 1:10.76, and Brooks later won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:34.42.

The 400 medley relay team of Ashley Wilson, Brooks, Melanie Rebechi and Rose Buckley took first with a time of 4:27.15 to earn 11 points, while the 400 freestyle team of Berry, Cannatella, Anne Welsh and Ladas also earned 11 points with a time of 4:00.00 in their event.

CUA will return to the pool next Saturday, November 6 when the Cardinals host conference foe Susquehanna. Action gets underway beginning at 2:00.
