Radford vs. Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Virginia, October 30. THE Old Dominion women's swimming & diving team improved to 2-1 on the year with a 130-121 victory over Radford Saturday afternoon at the J.C. "Scrap" Chandler Pool.

Junior Erla Haradsdottir ((Njardvik, Iceland) and senior April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.) were multiple event winners for the Lady Monarchs in the win.

Haraldsdottir won both the 200 IM (2:08.61) and the 100 free (52.36). Her 100 free time currently places her sixth among the all-time fastest Lady Monarch times in the event.

Barrientos, meanwhile, once again took the top time in the 100 back (58.48) and was also a member of the first place 200 medley relay team (1:49.36).

ODU dominated the freestyle events. In addition to Haraldsdottir first place time in the 100 free, freshman Malin Ekstrand (Halmstad, Sweden) won the 50 free (24.41), freshman Laura Cempel (Mokena, Ill.) captured the top spot in the 200 free (1:57.27), and freshman Abby Vance (Raleigh, N.C.) claimed the fastest finish in the 1000 free (10:34.12). Both Vance's and Ekstrand's performances in their respective freestyle events put the them 10th in the all-time top Lady Monarch times.

Also helping the Lady Monarchs' to victory over the Highlanders was junior Maddie Stiles (Fairfax, Va.) who won the 100 fly in a time of 58.78.

The Lady Monarchs return to the water in the annual pod meet being held at James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va., November 5th-7th. In addition to facing the Dukes, ODU will also take on the College of William & Mary, Northeastern, and the College of Charleston. The men's team will also be in action on those days taking on the Tribe of William & Mary.
