Northern Iowa vs. North Dakota

GRAND FORKS, North Dakota, October 30. THE University of North Dakota women's swimming and diving team took on Northern Iowa at the Hyslop pool this afternoon at 12 p.m. The Sioux defeated the Panthers 171 – 115.

Today's victory brings the Sioux women to 4-0 for the season.

Celebrating Senior Day, Kathryn Fristad (Grand Forks, N.D.), Rachel Lee (Corvallis, Ore.) and Stephenie Varichak (Fridley, Minn.) were recognized prior to the start of the meet.

"It was a solid meet for us today," said head coach Steve Parsons. "It wasn't our fastest meet, we can swim faster. We have some things to work on and fine-tune for next week. We definitely like where we are going, but again, we still have some work to do."

North Dakota came out with a bang taking first, second and third place in the 400 medley relay. With a time of 3:59.25, Veronica Medon (So., Huntsville, Ontario), Camille Merwin (Fr., Aliso Viejo, Calif.), Caitlin Conci (Jr., Craig, Colo.) and Devonne Dalin (So., Sioux Falls, S.D.) took the number one spot.

The Sioux carried the momentum to the next event as Dalonda Dalin (Jr., Sioux Falls, S.D.) swam a season best in the 1000 free (10:40.60). Devonne Dalin won the next event, the 200 free, with a time of 1:55.62, just seconds ahead of teammate Kelsey Richels (Fr., Wahpeton, N.D.) (1:57.27). Devonne also claimed first place in the 100 free (53.35) and was a part of the 400 freestyle relay with Kara Fisher (So., Fergus Falls, Minn.), Kaitlin Bolinske (Fr., Williston, N.D.) and Richels, who swam an exhibition time of (3:36.70).

Medon placed first in the 100 (1:00.52) and 200 back (2:09.40). Swimming exhibition, she also recorded the top score in the 200 IM (2:12.84).

Merwin swam her season best in both the 100 (1:07.28) and 200 breast (2:25.22) to take first-place in both events.

The Sioux continued to take the top finishes in each event. After leading Northern Iowa for a majority of the meet, UND chose to exhibition many of their top performers in the 3-meter dive, 100 fly, 200 IM and the 400 freestyle relay.

Varichak recorded the top exhibition score on the 3-meter dive (253.95) and dove into first on the 1-meter with a season best score of 239.50.

Swimming exhibition in the 100 fly, Conci touched at 58.62. She took first in the 100 fly (2:09.14) ahead of teammates Allison Maxwell (Fr., Rogers, Minn.; 2:11.20) and Madison Porter (Fr., Dickinson, N.D.; 2:11.58). Porter and Conci both posted season best times.

Alyssa Bailey (Fr., Spearfish, S.D.) swam to first-place in the 50 free (25.02) and Lee swam her season best in the 500 free (5:08.32).

Also competing for UND this afternoon was: Emma Abrahamson (So., Mankato, Minn.), Gabrielle Bunten (Fr., Forest Lake, Minn.), Katelyn Johnson (Jr., Albany, Ore.), Caitlin Jung (Fr., Hugo, Minn.), Megan Keidel (Jr., Bismarck, N.D.), Sami Puk (Fr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa.), Brittany Schimidt (Jr., Grand Forks, N.D.), Samantha Simon (Jr., Barrington, Ill.), Stephanie Thompson (Fr., Lovell, Wyo.), Alexis Thomsen (Fr., Chisago, Minn.) and Rachael Waldbillig (Fr., Circle Pines, Minn.)

The Sioux will compete next on Saturday, November 6, 2010 at Evanston, Ill., against host Illinois-Chicago, Northwestern and UW-Milwaukee.
