Michigan, Texas vs. Indiana, Day Two

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana, October 30. IN a back-and-forth meet between Big Ten rivals Indiana and Michigan the Hoosiers came up just short in the final session of competition Saturday afternoon at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.

Indiana dropped a 188-182 decision to Michigan and fell 189-173 to Texas. Texas was also a 211.5-150.5 winner over the Wolverines.

The final session began with the longest swim, the 1,650-yard freestyle. Freshman Lindsay Vrooman took second with a time of 16:49.96, with junior Brittany Strumbel fourth (17:00.44) and junior Nikki White fifth (17:02.42). Texas' Leah Gingrich won with an NCAA provisional time of 16:39.39.

Junior Allysa Vavra was second in the 200-yard backstroke with a career best time of 2:00.42. Senior Ashley Jones touched fourth at 2:01.10, with teammate sophomore Taylor Wohrley fifth (2:01.11). That gave Indiana a 10-point lead over Michigan heading into the 100 freestyle.

Sophomore Amy Cozad led the Hoosiers on the tower with a second-place finish, tallying 279.50 points. Senior Heidi Mahnken was fourth (266.50), and junior Nicole Brehm seventh (243.55).

In the 100 free Strumbel was sixth (51.77) and Sara Delay eighth (52.05). The 200 breaststroke belonged to Texas' Laura Sogar who nearly topped her own school record and set a new Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center record with a winning time of 2:09.78. Vavra was second in 2:18.09. Freshman Bronwyn Pasloski was sixth in 2:19.27, and junior Katelyn Ishee was eighth (2:20.91).

Indiana had a 12-point cushion over Michigan heading into the 200 butterfly where Brittany Barwegen was out-touched at the wall by Michigan's Adrienne Bicek. Bicek finished in 1:58.56, with Barwegen improving her NCAA B cut with a 1:58.82. Brenna MacLean was eighth in 2:05.89.

The meet came down to the 400 freestyle relay for the Hoosiers and Wolverines with Indiana holding a 178-175 lead entering the event. Indiana trailed Michigan after the first 100 by 6/10ths of a second and increased that lead to one second at the halfway point and continued to build on that lead over the third leg. Anchor Brittany Strumbel made up some of that time but it was not enough as Michigan finished second overall at 3:24.40, followed by the Hoosiers in third at 3:25.51.

Indiana returns to the pool Nov. 19-20 with a double dual meet against Virginia and Penn State in Charlottesville, Virginia.
