USA Swimming to Commission Independent Investigation into Fran Crippen’s Death

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, October 25. IN a press release just distributed, USA Swimming has announced that it is commissioning an independent investigation into the death of Fran Crippen this weekend at the FINA Open Water event held in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates.

"What happened in Fujairah on Saturday is an absolute tragedy, and a thorough investigation must be conducted to provide clear answers to the Crippen family and swimming community, as well as to identify and establish clear guidelines by which all international competitions should be conducted." USA Swimming Executive Director Chuck Wielgus said in the statement. "With the insight gained from this investigation, USA Swimming plans to call on FINA and its member nations to thoroughly review and improve open water safety protocols, procedures and precautions."

While FINA will be conducting its own official investigation into the death, this investigation will be conducted separately and independently.

Details regarding the independent investigation will be released when they are available.
