New Mexico State vs. Boise State, North Texas

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico, October 22. THE New Mexico State swimming and diving team opened the 2010-11 season with a strong showing against Boise State and North Texas. The Aggies defeated the Mean Green, 168-75, but fell to the Broncos, 140.5-102.5.

"Overall, it looked like everyone raced like it was the first meet of the year," head coach Rick Pratt said. "We were really excited at the beginning and looked really tight and weren't finishing our races like we should have.

"As the meet went on, we relaxed a little bit and got better down the stretch. We lost a couple of tight races that we could have won. It was a good first day. I think we can be better tomorrow."

The Aggies opened the meet with a second-place finish in the 400-medley relay with freshman Terrin Seaver, senior Alannah Lawrence, sophomore Harrah Ferrin and sophomore Alex Fenton leading the way.

In her Aggie debut, freshman Tricia Kiss won the 200 back and 200 individual medley, which actually resulted in a tie for top honors. Seaver also scored in the 200 back with a second-place finish.

Junior Carly Smith swept the diving events in her first appearance as an Aggie, and senior Mariesa Cloud followed with a pair of second-place finishes on the boards.

"I'm really proud of our divers," Pratt said. "They looked awesome. It's a great thing coach (Jonathan) Johnson has. I'm proud of their efforts."

Sophomore Beth Cate collected second place in both the 200 free and 200 fly along with third place in the 500 free. In the sprint freestyle events, senior Kelly Conrad claimed second in the 50 free and 100 free, while junior Gina Palombit was fourth in 50 free and Fenton was third in the 100 free.

"I thought the freshman did well," he said. "Terrin Seaver and Tricia Kiss looked great. Sophomore Alex Fenton looked really good, and sophomore Beth Cate had a great day with three solid swims."

In 200 breaststroke, junior Maria Spies was second and senior Kelly Runestrand was third. NM State ended the meet with a second-place showing in the 200-free relay with the team of Conrad, sophomore Eryn Murphy, Palombit and Fenton.

The Aggies are hosting both teams again Saturday, Oct. 23 at 11 a.m.
