Iowa vs. Michigan State

EAST LANSING, Michigan, October 22. THE University of Iowa men's swimming and diving team took on Michigan State in its first road meet of the season. The Hawkeyes defeated the Spartans 181-119. Today's victory brings the Iowa men to 3-0 for the season, with a 2-0 record in the Big Ten.

The Hawkeyes started off with a splash in the 200 medley relay. The team of seniors Max Dittmer, Sean Hagan and juniors Paul Gordon and Ryan Phelan won the event with a time of 1:32.78. Manuel Belzer carried on the momentum and recorded a collegiate best time in the 1000 free. Belzer touched the wall at 9:34.27 for the win.

Gordon and sophomore Jordan Huff finish one and two in 200 free. Gordon won the title with a time of 1:39.75 and Huff finished right behind with a time of 1:41.39. Similar to the 200 free, Phelan and sophomore Duncan Partridge took the first two places in the 50 free. Phelan took first with a time of 20.78 while Partridge came in second (21.33).

Iowa dominated the 100 free, taking the first three places. Partridge claimed first place with a time of 46.18. Phelan came in right behind at 46.64 while Huff finished in third (46.90). Belzer recorded his second first-place finish of the night in the 500 free. He recorded a time of 4:37.98.

The Hawkeyes ended the meet the same way they started it. Gordon, Phelan, Partridge and Huff teamed up in the 400 free relay to win the event with a time of 03:07.19.

Freshman diver, Osvel Molina took second place in both the one-meter and three-meter events. In the one-meter he scored 286.27 and a 291.52 in the three meet. Freshman diver, Arsen Sarkisian finished right behind Molina in both events. He scored 251.17 in the one-meter and finished the meet out strong with a score of 284.93 in the three-meter event.

"We had some gritty racing and diving in a tough environment," said Head Coach Marc Long. "We're happy to earn a Big Ten road win and get back to practice."

Iowa will return to action Nov. 5 when they continue on the road to Minnesota. The event will start 5 p.m.
