Texas vs. California

BERKELEY, California, October 16. TWO wins apiece from junior swimmer Leah Gingrich, sophomore swimmer Laura Sogar and sophomore diver Maren Taylor paced the Longhorns to a 156-144 season-opening victory over California Saturday at the Golden Bears' Spieker Aquatics Complex.

Cal opened the meet with a decisive victory in the 200-yard medley relay, but Texas countered with a victory in the 1000 freestyle, where Gingrich posted her first of two victories with a winning mark of 9 minutes, 59.22 seconds. Freshman Lauren Ross added three points for the Horns by taking third in 10:10.88. Junior Karlee Bispo, a native of nearby Modesto, Calif., followed by winning the 200 freestyle with a NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 1:46.97. Junior Katie Riefenstahl took third in 1:49.55.

Freshman Lily Moldenhauer notched four points for Texas by taking second in the 100 backstroke with a NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of 55.09. Sophomore Jessica Guro took fourth in 55.89. Sogar notched her first of two wins on the day in the 100 breaststroke, where she was victorious in a NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of 1:00.97. Sophomore Bethany Adams added a NCAA "B" cut of 1:02.38 for third place.

Gingrich added her second win of the day in the 200 butterfly with a NCAA "B" cut of 1:58.10. Gingrich narrowly trailed Cal's Amanda Sims at 150 yards but out-split Sims 30.03-30.54 in the final 50 yards to claim the win. Cal's Liv Jensen took the following event, the 50 freestyle, but Texas tallied nine points in the event with second, third and fourth-place finishes. Bispo took second with a NCAA "B" cut of 22.97, and Adams placed third in 23.22. Sophomore Kelsey Amundsen took fourth in 23.39.

Taylor scored her first diving victory in the one-meter event, which she won by 60 points with a total of 307.20 points. Redshirt sophomore Shelby Cullinan took third with 246.23 points. Bispo followed with a second-place showing in the 100 freestyle in 49.66, and Amundsen added a fourth-place finish in 50.55. Riefenstahl notched a victory in the 200 backstroke in a NCAA "B" cut of 1:58.44, and Guro followed in second in 2:00.15.

The 200 breaststroke featured one of the premier swims of the afternoon, as Sogar eclipsed her own school record in the event while taking first in 2:10.15. It topped her previous school mark of 2:10.31 set at the 2010 Big 12 Championships. She claimed the event with over four seconds distancing herself and Cal's Caitlin Leverenz.

Texas continued to stockpile valuable points to hold off the Golden Bears. Senior Adrienne Woods notched four points with a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle at 4:55.78. Freshman Samantha Tucker placed third and picked up three points in 4:56.93. Amundsen added a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly at 54.95, and freshman Ellen Lobb placed fourth in 55.79.

Taylor led a one-two-three Texas finish in the three-meter diving event, where she was victorious with 310.13 points. Cullinan took second with 286.20 points, and sophomore Diana Wilcox placed third with 278.43 points. Sogar capped her brilliant afternoon by taking second in the 400 individual medley in 4:21.02. Gingrich placed third in 4:21.55. Cal finished off the meet with a victory in the 400 freestyle relay.

Texas resumes its fall schedule on Friday, Oct. 29 in Bloomington, Ind., where the Horns will take on host Indiana and Michigan.
