Massachusetts vs. Boston University

BOSTON, Massachusetts, October 16. THE Boston University women's swimming and diving team kicked off its 2010-11 season in winning fashion as it defeated Massachusetts on Saturday afternoon at Competition Pool. The Terriers won 12 events en route to a 177-115 victory.

BU opened the afternoon with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay team, as rookie Kendra Cheng swam the lead-off leg, followed by junior Kristen Connors, senior Kirsten Tullis and senior Maria McIntyre. The victory jumpstarted the Terriers' afternoon as they went on to win 11 individual races.

The Terriers went 1-2-3 in the distance race of the 1,000-yard freestyle as rookie Meaghan Grimes won her first collegiate race with a blazing time of 10:22.75 – over 18 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. Senior Sarah Doersam came in second (10:40.99) and sophomore Katie Radin finished third with a time of 10:46.00.

Junior Amanda Schmitz – one of the heroes from last year's America East championships – won the 200 free in 1:53.15, followed by Cheng with a time of 1:54.36. McIntyre, the last leg of the winning 200 medley relay team, won the 100 back in 59.17.

Connors won her first individual race of the season with a winning time of 1:04.70 in the 100 breast. Continuing with the sprint events, Tullis and sophomore Lauren Drake went 1-2 in the 50 free with times of 24.26 and 24.81, respectively.

After finishing second in the 1,000-free, Doersam moved up one slot to claim first in the 200 fly with a time of 2:10.97. The duo of McIntyre and Drake claimed the top two spots in the 100 free with times of 52.49 and 53.19, respectively, while Radin (2:09.58) and Grimes (2:10.22) repeated the feat in the 200 back. The Terriers swept the podium in the 500 free as sophomore Megan Happ touched first with a time of 5:12.47, while Doersam (5:13.59) and sophomore Alex Hunter (5:19.65) took second and third.

In the diving events, BU dominated, sweeping first, second and third on both the one- and three-meter boards. Sophomore Melinda Matyas won both events with scores of 243.90 (1M) and 250.43). Graduate student Chelsea Glincman and senior Sarah Colton swapped second and third with Glincman placing second on the 1M (222.23) and third on the 3M (219.45). Colton scored a 217.88 to place third on the 1M and a 238.35 on the 3M – good for second.

BU will return to the water on Saturday (Oct. 23) when it hosts Bryant and Maine at 1:30 p.m.
