Commonwealth Games: Day Three Prelims

DELHI, India, October 5. THE third day of long course meter preliminaries is complete at the Commonwealth Games held in India.

Women's 800 free
South Africa's Wendy Trott earned the top seed in the distance event with a time of 8:34.34, while England's Rebecca Adlington took second overall in 8:35.82. Canada's Alexandra Komarnycky placed third in 8:36.71, while Australia's Melissa Gorman finished fourth in 8:38.16.

Australia's Katie Goldman snared fifth in 8:38.91, while Australia's Blair Evans qualified sixth in 8:39.49. England's Sasha Matthews (8:41.10) and Scotland's Megan Gilchrist (8:46.85) also made finals in the distance swim.

Men's 100 free
With Canada's Brent Hayden already putting up the time to beat this week with a Games-record 48.18 as his team's relay leadoff, South Africa's Gideon Louw qualified first in 49.24. Australia's Eamon Sullivan placed second in 49.79, while Hayden (49.79) and England's Grant Turner (49.87) grabbed third and fourth. England's Adam Brown (49.88), Australia's Tommaso D'Orsogna (49.89), Australia's Kyle Richardson (49.93) and Cayman Islands' Shaune Fraser (49.93) rounded out the top eight.

South Africa's Graeme Moore (49.96), England's Simon Burnett (49.97), Cayman Islands' Brett Fraser (50.21), Kenya's David Dunford (50.44), India's Virdhawal Khade (50.67), Canada's Richard Hortness (50.85), Papau New Guinea's Ryan Pini (51.28) and Wales' Ieuan Lloyd (51.44) made up the rest of the semifinal field.

Women's 100 fly
Wales' Jemma Lowe (58.91) and Canada's Audrey Lacroix (58.96) both cleared 59 seconds for the top two seeds in qualifying. Australia's Felicity Galvez (59.28) and Canada's Katerine Savard (59.41) qualified third and fourth, while Australia's Alicia Coutts touched fifth in 59.49. England's Ellen Gandy was the final swimmer under 1:00 with a sixth-seeded 59.63. Canada's MacKenzie Downing (1:00.14) and England's Fran Halsall (1:00.26) finished seventh and eighth.

England's Jessica Sylvester (1:00.31), Scotland's Louise Pate (1:00.64), Australia's Yolane Kukla (1:00.66), Wales' Alys Thomas (1:01.16), New Zealand's Natalie Wiegersma (1:01.17), Northern Ireland's Bethany Carson (1:04.11), India's Pooja Alva (1:04.53) and Wales' Sian Morgan (1:05.00) grabbed the other transfer spots into semis.

Men's 200 back
England's James Goddard led the way in the distance dorsal with a 1:59.30, while Canada's Charles Francis finished second in 1:59.67. Canada's Tobias Oriwol (1:59.79) and Wales' Marco Loughran (1:59.88) also cleared 2:00 to qualify third and fourth.

England's Ryan Bennett (2:00.32), Australia's Ashley Delaney (2:00.44), England's Christopher Walker-Hebborn (2:00.57) and New Zealand's Gareth Kean (2:00.86) qualified fifth through eighth to make up the rest of the championship heat.

Women's 200 breast
Finals should be interesting as two of the top 200 breaststrokers in the world are set to go head-to-head. Canada's Annamay Pierse, the world record holder, paced prelims with a 2:27.74, while Games record holder Leisel Jones of Australia qualified third in 2:28.57. Australia's Sarah Katsoulis split the difference with a second-place 2:28.29.

England's Stacey Tadd (2:28.75), Canada's Martha McCabe (2:28.85), Australia's Tessa Wallace (2:28.89), Scotland's Kerry Buchan (2:31.05) and Scotland's Hannah Miley (2:32.04) also made the championship field.

ParaSport Men's S9 50 free
Australia's Matthew Cowdrey, the world record holder with a 25.34, cruised in prelims with a 25.66. England's Simon Miller (27.00), Australia's Benjamin Austin (27.68) and India's Prasanta Karmakar (27.69) qualified second through fourth.

Australia's Blake Cochrane (27.81), Scotland's Sean Fraser (28.60), Northern Ireland's Laurence McGivern (28.84) and India's Sachin Verma (29.05) also made the finale.

Men's 800 free relay
Australia's Nicholas Ffrost, Ryan Napoleon, Leith Brodie and Kenrick Monk topped qualifying with a 7:22.47, while England's Robert Bale, Daniel Coombs, Steven Beckerleg and Richard Charlesworth finished second in 7:22.61. Scotland's Andrew Hunter, Lewis Smith, Cameron Brodie and Jak Scott placed third in 7:26.98.

Canada (7:37.29), Malaysia (7:43.92), South Africa (7:45.73), Singapore (7:47.19) and India (7:49.20) rounded out the top eight to make finals.
