Commonwealth Games: Christian Sprenger Sets Games Record During Day Two Prelims

DELHI, India, October 4. THE second day of long course meter preliminaries is complete at the Commonwealth Games held in India.

Men's 50 fly
Kenya's Jason Dunford paced qualifying with a time of 23.61, while Australia's Geoffrey Huegill earned second in 23.66. South Africa's Roland Schoeman (23.76) and Australia's Mitchell Patterson (23.92) finished third and fourth. England's Antony James (24.37), Australia's Andrew Lauterstein (24.63), Scotland's Andrew Mayor (24.70) and India's Virdhawal Khade (24.72) touched fifth through eighth.

New Zealand's Daniel Bell (24.81), Papau New Guinea's Ryan Pini (24.90), New Zealand's Moss Burmester (25.13), Guernsey's Ian Powell (25.13), Trinidad's Cadell Lyons (25.16), Cyprus' Alexandre Bakhtiarov (25.18), Trinidad's Joshua McLeod (25.19) and Trinidad's Jarryd Gregoire (25.57) comprised the rest of the semifinal field.

Women's 100 back
Australia's Belinda Hocking led the way in prelims with a top time of 1:00.87, while teammate Emily Seebohm touched second in 1:00.90. England's Elizabeth Simmonds (1:01.05) and Canada's Sinead Russell (1:01.49) placed third and fourth. New Zealand's Melissa Ingram (1:01.51), Wales' Georgia Davies (1:01.63), England's Gemma Spofforth (1:01.68) and England's Stephanie Proud (1:01.68) were among the top eight.

Canada's Julia Wilkinson (1:01.71), New Zealand's Emily Thomas (1:01.77), Australia's Sophie Edington (1:01.88), Canada's Lauren Lavigna (1:02.58), Northern Ireland's Melanie Nocher (1:03.53), Bermuda's Kiera Aitken (1:04.82), Northern Ireland's Chelsey Wilson (1:05.23) and Malaysia's Kah Yan Chan (1:05.48) also made the semifinals.

Men's 100 breast
Australia's Christian Sprenger cruised to the top seed with a time of 1:00.61, while New Zealand's Glenn Snyders took second in 1:01.30. Sprenger lowered the Games record in the event, beating Chris Cook's 2006 mark of 1:00.94.

Scotland's Michael Jamieson (1:01.53) and Kristopher Gilchrist (1:01.87) wound up third and fourth. Wales' Robert Holderness (1:01.90), Australia's Brenton Rickard (1:01.91), South Africa's Cameron van der Burgh (1:02.13) and Canada's Scott Dickens (1:02.47) qualified fifth through eighth.

India's Sandeep Sejwal (1:02.72), England's Andrew Willis (1:02.87), England's Richard Webb (1:02.89), Northern Ireland's Andrew Bree (1:03.09), England's Daniel Sliwinski (1:03.20), Australia's Craig Calder (1:03.47), Northern Ireland's Michael Dawson (1:03.80) and Tonga's Amini Fonua (1:04.02) grabbed the rest of the transfer spots into semis.

ParaSport Women's 50 free
South Africa's Natalie Du Toit led the way with a 29.82, while Australia's Annabelle Williams (30.03) and England's Stephanie Millward (30.09) placed second and third. Australia's Ellie Cole (31.11), Canada's Katarina Roxon (31.57), Trinidad's Shanntol Ince (34.30), India's Kiran Tak (38.79) and India's Anjani Patel (47.64) also made the finale.

Women's 100 free
A day after posting the top swim of the first day in the women's 200 IM, Australia's Alicia Coutts qualified first in the 100 free with a 55.06. New Zealand's Hayley Palmer touched second in 55.09. Australia's Emily Seebohm (55.30) and England's Amy Smith (55.50) took third and fourth. England's Fran Halsall (55.58), Canada's Victoria Poon (55.61), Australia's Yolane Kukla (55.92) and Canada's Genevieve Saumur (56.00) finished fifth through eighth.

England's Emma Saunders (56.13), New Zealand's Natasha Hind (56.26), New Zealand's Penelope Marshall (56.44), Scotland's Caitlin McClatchey (56.45), Canada's Erica Morningstar (56.51), Wales' Georgia Holderness (57.51), Cyprus' Anna Stylianou (57.61) and Scotland's Sara Hamilton (57.62) also earned spots in the semifinal round.

Men's 200 free
South Africa's Jean Basson topped qualifying in 1:48.21, while Australia's Thomas Fraser-Holmes placed second in 1:48.63. Scotland's Robert Renwick (1:48.73) and David Carry (1:48.84) touched third and fourth.

Australia's Kenrick Monk (1:48.84), Canada's Stefan Hirniak (1:49.11), England's Robert Bale (1:49.26) and England's Ross Davenport (1:49.38) garnered the final transfer spots into the championship heat.
