Davidson vs. Clemson

CLEMSON, South Carolina, October 1. SOPHOMORE Drew Onken won three individual titles as the Davidson Wildcat men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened the 2010-11 season against the Clemson Tigers Friday night at McHugh Natatorium.

In his second season, Onken picked up where he left off, winning three events in the season opener. The school-record holder in all three, Onken won the 200 fly with a time of 1:53.63, the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:07.55 and the 200 IM with a time of 1:54.72.

"Drew Onken continued his streak of impressive performances," head coach John Young said. "The work he put in during the summer has been evident in his training, and now in his racing."

The Tigers came out on top of both the Wildcat men and women in dual-meet competition, but Davidson has plenty of individual performances to build on.

"Given the work we've been doing, in and out of the pool, I'm encouraged by today's results," Young said. "There were some nice performances for upperclassmen and freshmen alike, and most of the team was attentive to the details of their races."

Junior Curtis Chaney won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:44.93 and finished second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:56.72, and classmate David Kerman won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.14 for the Wildcat men's final individual title.

"Curtis had a nice 200 freestyle, and swam a well-controlled 500 before being nipped in the last 50," Young said. "And David Kerman's 100 breaststroke victory was a nice step in his development in the event."

Seniors Lindsey Martin and Emily Castle also won events for the Wildcat women. School-record holders in their respective events, Martin finished first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.51, while Castle won the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.34.

"Lindsey Martin was impressive in her come-from-behind victory in the 100 freestyle," Young said. "And Emily Castle perpetuated her winning ways in the 100 butterfly."

Several other Wildcats turned in notable performances. Junior Geoffrey Peitz finished second in the 200 backstroke and third in the 100 backstroke (52.96), and sophomore Kelsi Hobbs turned in solid times in the events as well of 1:01.38 and 2:11.46, respectively. Junior Joe Burquist was the runner-up in the 100 butterfly with a time of 52.71.

"Geoff Peitz and Kelsi Hobbs executed great underwater game plans in the backstroke events," Young said. "And Joe Burquist was also exceptional underwater in the 100 fly, where he was barely touched out at the finish."

The Wildcats return to action when the travel to East Carolina Oct. 15 for a 5 p.m. meet
