Wisconsin-Milwaukee Names Kyle Clements Interim Head Swimming and Diving Coach

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin, September 30. KYLE Clements has been named interim head coach of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's and women's swimming & diving team, acting athletic director Dave Gilbert announced today. Clements, the top assistant for the past two seasons, takes over for former head coach Erica Janssen, who has resigned to take a position at the University of Maryland.

"We are very appreciative of what Erica Janssen has done for our swimming & diving program and we wish her nothing but the best in her future endeavors at the University of Maryland," Gilbert said. "For the past two years, Kyle Clements has been an instrumental part of directing our program to the high level of success it has achieved in the Horizon League. Because of what he has brought to the program, we are naming him the interim head coach for the upcoming season."

Clements has helped the program reach unprecedented heights the past two seasons, culminating with the first Horizon League Championship for the men in 10 years and a league runner-up finish for the women a season ago.

The incredible achievements by the team have rewritten the record book, as 65 total records have been eclipsed 77 different times in his two years on staff. Clements has also helped coach 13 individual league champions over the course of the past two seasons.

"This is something I have worked very hard to get to," Clements said. "I have been given this wonderful opportunity with this great program and look to continue the direction it has headed the past few years. Coach Janssen brought me in here two years ago and gave me my chance as an assistant and I thought we worked very well together. We brought a lot of success to the team and program. I look forward to continuing to move the program in the direction that her and I started and do it with the team we have in place."

The 21 dual victories by the women's team over the past two years mark the highest two-year total in program history. The 13 victories in 2008-09 also set a school mark. On the men's side, the 17 dual victories marks the highest two-year total since 1996 and the team posted consecutive winning seasons for the first time since 2000.

Clements came to Milwaukee from Marshall University, where he served as the volunteer assistant coach for the women's swimming & diving team in his last season. Clements earned his undergraduate degree in aquatics from Ball State in 2007, while also minoring in teaching aquatics. He spent four years as a student assistant coach for the Ball State swim team while earning his degree.

Janssen, the head coach of the squad for the past two seasons and Horizon League Coach of the Year on the men's side in 2010, stepped down to take a job as the assistant coach for the Terrapins. A national search for the head coaching position will be conducted after the conclusion of the 2010-11 campaign.
