African Long Course Championships: Chanelle Van Wyk Downs Meet Record on Third Day

CASABLANCA, Morocco: September 16. THE third day of the African Long Course Championships came to a close with South African having another strong day, including three meet records (one individual and two relays).

South Africa's Chanelle Van Wyk clocked a meet record in the women's 100 back with a time of 1:02.32. Compatriot Jessica Ashley Cooper touched second in 1:04.15, also under the previous standard, while Egypt's Engi El Shazli finished third in 1:07.42.

South Africa's Leone Vorster topped the women's 400 free in 4:18.80, while teammate Rene Warnes finished second in 4:19.22. Egypt's Shahd Mostafa placed third overall in 4:25.88.

Algeria's Nabil Kebbab won the men's 100 free in 49.98, while Kenya's Jason Dunford (50.39) and David Dunford (50.55) placed second and third in the sprint event.

South Africa's Darren Murray grabbed the men's 200 back title in 2:01.44, while Tunisia's Taki Mrabet finished second in 2:04.93. Egypt's Mohamed Khaled Hussein earned third in 2:05.28.

Morocco's Sara El Bekri gave the partisan crowd something to cheer for with a 33.04 to win the women's 50 breast. Tunisia's Sarra Lajnef took second in 33.67, while South Africa's Ronwyn Roper wound up third in 33.79.

Dunford turned his silver in the men's 100 free into gold in the men's 50 fly with a 24.09 for the win. South Africa's Neil Watson touched second in 24.40, while teammate Garth Tune garnered third in 24.41.

In relay action, South Africa's Karin Prinsloo, Amanda Loots, Chanelle Van Wyk and Leone Vorster won the women's 400 free relay in a meet-record 3:50.15. Teammates Jay Cee Thompson, Daniel Marais, Devon Brown and Wesley Gilchrist cleared the meet record in the men's 800 free relay with a 7:29.21.
