Tyler Clary: Some Things You Might Not Know About Him

Feature by Michelle Berman, Swimming World intern

PISCATAWAY, New Jersey, September 9. TYLER Clary, born and raised in Norco, Calif., is known today as a swimmer who is destined to make it. Everyone wants him to do well, and everyone cheers him on. But what is there to Clary besides his super skills in the water? What does he wear, what does he eat, who does he hang out with? Let's take a look into the life of this stellar athlete:

1)
Michelle Berman (MB): Tyler what does your strength training look like?
Tyler Clary (TC): I do Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu twice a week. It's incredibly core intensive, and I've never been this strong core wise as I am right now. It's great for static strength training. I do this instead of lifting because I need to be strong not any bigger.

2)
MB: What are some of your hobbies and things you do for fun?
TC: I'm really into off-road racing. Any kind of trophy truck racing like the Baja 500 and Baja 1000. Also any kind of off-road rally racing. I watch them as much as I can on television, and hopefully I'll be able to go out and watch one of the Baja races in person soon

3)
MB: Any more hobbies we should know about?
TC: I've built two model helicopters from scratch, and I'm trying to develop a computer program that will help the models "learn" how to fly versus the user trying to explicitly tell it how to. I built them both in Michigan, totally on my own. It was part of the programming work I did as part of independent study stuff.

4)
MB: Are you a music fan?
TC: I'm really into electronic music like trance, house and dubstep. I listen to it before I swim. But I listen to pretty much anything else. I've only gone to one show for a band named Above and Beyond, which is my all-time favorite trance group.

5)
MB: Is there anything else about music you like?
TC: I really like DJing, and hopefully I can do it at a club every once and a while. I'd really like that. But it will never be a profession only a hobby.

6)
MB: What's your clothing style like?
TC: I really like to wear fancy jeans and brands like All Star and Rock Revival. I also really like to wear button-up shirts. My favorite brands are Roar, Seven Diamond, and Malibu Cowboy. For any who know of it, I really like fleur-de-lis designs.

7)
MB: Do you have any pets?
TC: At home in California, I have a West Highland Terrier named Wilbur. We named it that because when we first got him, his hair hadn't gotten its color yet so he looked pink like a baby pig (Wilbur is the pig in Charlotte's Web). But in Michigan, I had three ferrets named Bandit, Smokey and Cindy Lou. We also had a bird, but I will leave out the story of what happened to it.

8)
MB: Are you into shoes?
TC: I wear rainbow sandals everywhere. If I have to wear sneakers, I wear rainbows instead. I love them. When I'm going out or need to get dressed up though, I have Italian leather shoes.

9)
MB: Do you have any activities you like to do besides swim all the time?
TC: I love to go shooting. I own three shotguns. I also love to go trap shooting, or shoot sporting plays. Whenever I can, I love to go hunting. Someday, I would love to learn how to shoot a bow and arrow. When I go shooting, it's usually with my dad or my roommate Charlie Houchin.

10)
MB: Do you like to cook, and what's your favorite stuff to eat?
TC: I like to think of myself as a pretty good cook, not amazing but pretty good. My favorite thing to make and eat is prime rib. My favorite dessert would be carrot cake, and for breakfast it is usually always the same-eggs, hash browns and sausage and sometimes biscuits and gravy. If I can, I'll cover it all in apple butter.

Clary is currently residing in California where he swims full time with Jon Urbanchek at FAST (Fullerton Aquatic Swim Club) after bypassing his senior swim season at the University of Michigan. Clary is confident he will complete his degree after the 2012 London Olympics.

"I will go back and finish my degree, but not until after London 2012," Clary said.

Michelle Berman is a junior swimmer at Rutgers University who is serving as an intern at Swimming World this semester.
