IRVINE, California, August 21. IN an exciting finish, USA's Nathan Adrian had just enough in the tank to lasso Brazil's Cesar Cielo in the last few meters of the men's 50 free at the Pan Pacific Championships.

Cielo went out fast, and held the lead for most of the race, but Adrian powered home in the final few meters to claim a 21.55 to 21.57 victory. Both beat Cielo's meet record of 21.64 set during prelims, but Adrian protected the U.S. dominance in the event at this meet. The U.S. has won the previous two titles with Jason Lezak capturing the title in 2002 in 22.22, and Cullen Jones touching in 21.84 in 2006. Adrian moved into a second-ranked tie with Cielo in the world rankings with his effort, while Cielo's sometime training partner Fred Bousquet is on top of the sprint heap with a 21.36 from the European Championships.

Canada's Brent Hayden raced to third in 21.89, just missing his national record of 21.73 from last year, while Brazil's Bruno Fratus took fourth in 21.93 to complete the sub-22 times.

South Africa's Gideon Louw (22.08), Jones (22.10), Australia's Ashley Callus (22.15) and Australia's Cameron Prosser (22.41) picked up the rest of the championship spots.

USA's Garrett Weber-Gale touched first in the B final with a time of 22.24, just off his top 25 season best 22.21 from the U.S. Nationals.
